Pet Companies Paying Off Complaining Customers Now

So this is the world we live in huh? Perhaps this has been going on for a long time and I’ve been ignorant of the fact. Perhaps I’ve been living under a rock. Or perhaps it’s a new, disgusting trend. Whatever the case may be, this little news topic is disturbing in many ways. If you are unsure as to what I’m referring to, let me catch you up. Three manufacturers that make dog treats named Waggin’ Train, Canyon Creek Ranch, and Milo's Kitchen have been linked to the illnesses of at least 900 dogs. In fact, the FDA had to caution dog owners about staying away from these treats, as the complaints have been flooding in.

That’s not the disgusting part. The disgusting part is the report that one of these companies confirmed that they have been paying off dog owners who have complained. But it doesn’t stop there. Not only are they paying them off, they want them to sign a sort of standard release liability form. This basically ensures the company that the dog owner will keep quiet. Even if something happens in the future, they still have to keep quiet. I mean, what in the heck is right and ethical about that.

It seems these days pet food manufacturers do not want to take ownership and be up to standard. The pet food industry as a whole does not have strict rules like foods for human consumption, which is understandable. But come on, make sure the food/treats are at least edible. Instead of admitting that there is a problem, as evidenced with the 900+ cases of sick dogs, they try to keep people quiet. These companies adamantly stand behind that fact that it’s not their treats that are causing any problems.

Paying people off to keep them silent I think is a sign of guilt. If you really didn’t think it was your treats causing all these health problems, why pay people off? They want to protect themselves just in case this becomes an even bigger problem. They want to completely void themselves of any liability. If you ask me, a trusting and legit pet food company would attack this problem. They would voluntarily recall the pet food and give its customers a piece of mind. If not that, they would at least acknowledge that there may be an issue and they will‘look into it.’

Regardless, if this is going to become a new trend, or if it is already and now I just became aware, then what’s next?
