Pet Health Protection

If you have ever been a pet owner I am sure you have thought about pet health protection. After all, our pets are part of our family. I am fortunate enough to have two very special friends and they are both Dachshunds. Later on I will try to get you a picture of them but for now I just want to tell you a bit about the two. Stubby, the older male, ended up being called Stubby Danno. I guess he is around eight years old. Then there is Annie, our two-year old female, who is now called Annie Bella. It strikes me odd that both dogs ended up with a second name but their personality dictated it.

As I think about pet health protection I recall a very sad story, one in which I still have a very bad mommy about. You see, one day right after Annie came into heat for the first time poor Stubby was confined to the cellar. The poor guy became so upset that the children say he tried to commit suicide. I am not sure if that was exactly what happened or not but poor Stubby was found at the bottom of the cellar steps. There he was with his gleaming reddish brown coat, just laying there not quite sure what had just transpired. About a foot away we found one of his canine teeth, completely in tact, root and all. Needless to say the poor fella was never put in the cellar again. Unfortunately, accidents happen that is why it is important to protect our pets to the best of our ability.

Come to think of it poor Stubby Danno has had a couple of close calls. The family was driving back from North Carolina to where we live in Maine. It was only about three days before Christmas and we had been to Camp Le June to attend my son's graduation from boot camp. Stubby was a gift to my son on his sixteenth birthday but Stubby decided that he belonged to me after my son joined the Marine Corp.

We made it all the way out to North Carolina and back into Bangor, Maine when a drunk driver slammed into us. Fortunately everyone was ok, everyone that is except Stubbie. You see I was sitting on the passenger side and Stubbie always sat on my lap. The airbag deployed and poor Stubby's head rammed, full force into the bag. He looked up at me and I thought for sure that I was going to loose him. He couldn't hold his head up and his eyes wouldn't focus. I wailed, "He killed my dog!" I was so distraught, I felt like I was loosing my best friend.

While waiting for the police to arrive I cradled Stubby in my arms and wondered what I would ever do without him. As soon as there was enough officers on scene the police chief loaded me and Stubbie into his personal car and took us to the veterinary hospital.

I would have paid any price for Stubby Danno to be well. When you are in those circumstances it doesn't matter. It wasn't until days later as I sat patting my beautiful, red-headed boy that I thought about the situation. What could have I done to prevent that situation. After all, I was responsible for his injuries. I was his protector and he trusted me with his life. I had failed him and I felt so bad. What if he had died? I never would have forgiven myself. Although accidents are bound to happen, it is my responsibility to make sure my pets have the best pet health protection available. These days that is exactly what I do.
