Pet Proof Your Home

Having pets are liking having small children at home. We go to great lengths to make sure that our homes are safe for our kids so why not do the same thing for our pets? Aside from not having to go through the heartbreak of seeing our beloved pets injured or worst, taking safety precautions will save us a lot of money that would otherwise go to treatment, surgery or confinement. As the saying goes, it is better to be safe than to be sorry. So here are some tips to help you make your house pet safe:

1. Make sure all toxic materials ( bathroom, oven cleaners, etc.) are out of your pets reach. Puppies and kittens especially are playful and curious. They get attracted to containers and although they may not intentionally swallow toxic materials, they might chew on it's containers and accidentally ingest the content. Same goes with medicines, garden materials and any other things that has a label "keep out of reach of children" . This automatically should be kept out of reach of pets as well. Sometimes we just take for granted that these materials are within reach thinking that our pets will not bother with them but what we don't realize is that anything within reach for playful pets is a toy!

2. Hide all electrical wirings because again, pets love chewing and there is danger if they do this with a live electrical wire. Consult with an electrician how you can keep your house child and pet safe from dangerous wirings. More often, if you tell them that you have kids or pets at home, they will take extra precaution when installing electrical appliances.

3. Give only safe, non- toxic pet toys that was brought from a reputable pet store. Avoid small toys that can be swallowed.

4. If your pet is going to be left alone at the house most of the day, make sure that he has a clean drinking water, food to eat and a good ventilation. If possible, have a neighbor know that you have your pet alone at home in case an emergency arises.

5. Lastly, have an emergency plan in case something happens. Have your veterinarians phone number available in case you need to call him.

A happy, safe home equals a happy, safe pet! Taking simple steps to ensure your pets safety will give you the peace of mind knowing that every precaution is in place.
