Picking Up After Your Dog

I have just read a news article about dogs fouling on beaches. Apparently the dog walkers have been given a designated area to walk their dogs and they are required to be on a leash. This is happening between 10.00am and 5.00pm until the end of August. The council are responding to requests from the public about dogs fouling on the beach.

I am a dog walker and I pick up after my dogs all the time. I absolutely agree that every dog walker should pick up after their dogs. The dogs cannot do it themselves so it is up to the owners to do it for them. There is nothing worse that seeing the pavements and paths littered with dog poo. I cannot blame the people for complaining about the state of their beach especially as children use them. The majority of dog owners are responsible people but you get the few who will not conform.

The councils here used to supply poo bags to dog owners and I think that the situation has deteriorated since they stopped issuing them. Maybe people think that because they do not get them for free they should not need to buy them. Anyone who owns a dog is responsible for that dog. Responsible for the dogs welfare, for feeding, grooming, training and picking up their poo's. People can be fined a penalty for not picking up after their dogs and the council are supposed to have employed staff to watch out for people who do not pick up but I have yet to hear of anyone ever being caught. With the state of the walkways I wonder why no one is being caught.

Now I am going to digress a bit. While we are on this subject - what about horses? Why is it the owner's responsibility to pick up after their dogs when a horse can travel up the paths dropping poo's and nothing is said about it. Why is the rider allowed to ignore the droppings and yet dog owner's are not? Should they not carry a bucket with them and clear up as well? After all, they make a bigger mess than a dog.

I go about with my pockets stuffed with poo bags. I am always prepared and my little pooches make sure I get plenty exercise bending over to pick them up. Bless them, they are only thinking my figure could do with it!
