Preventing My Dogs Anxiety Attacks

I've owned four dogs now, and this latest addition to our home Jersey is a 5 yr old rescue boxer. Has come with a little baggage. Her main issue is Anxiety Attacks. Its bad, I mean really bad, she needs to see my wife or I at all times when we're home.

She even waits for us to get out of the shower, she watches me workout, she lies down in my office when I'm working on the PC, she hardly ever voluntarily lets us out of her site. Distraction is our best weapon when it comes to changing her mindset, allowing her to focus on something else.

So how do you prevent anxiety attacks in a dog? I don't like using drugs or chemicals for almost any reason. So for Jersey, medication is not an option in this instance. I don't see the point of putting her on medication the rest of her life for a non life threatening issue.

However, there are some things that we do to try and help her cope with our absence when my wife and I go shopping or out to visit friends. We try to mix up the routine when we are going out and leaving the house. That way Jersey doesn't get worked up before we even leave.

Many dogs will watch your daily routines, if they know when you do something like, going to the closet, then put on your coat, and grab your keys. They know you're leaving and start getting worked up even before you touch the front door.

We put Jersey on our enclosed porch when we leave the house, She gets too nervous alone in the whole house, and she refuses the crate, (we rescued her from 20 hours a day in a crate) so, we use the porch instead it's heated, no worries. We put her blanket in there, we also put a piece of clothing, like a tee shirt we may have worn the day before in with her. This helps to settle her down and prevents her from getting a full blown anxiety attack.

We put a dog treats in with Jersey, usually a marrow bone (see my cookie bone article) or you can use any suitable treat. We put a small bowl of water in with her if we are leaving for more that three hours.

We also put one of her toys in there with her. This has worked for us with great success for the past year. We have not had more than one or two incidents where she chewed a toy up and there was stuffing everywhere.

Try it and see if the tee shirt idea works for your dog. I also think that putting her in the porch helps because, she can look outside and see whats happening in the neighborhood. That coupled with the treat that keeps her busy for a while, allows her to re-focus her attention on something besides where I am.

That is why the Tee Shirt is key, If you use an article of clothing you have worn and it smells like you it will help calm them down.

My labrador has anxiety attacks too and we've had him since he was a puppy. He hates being on his own. When we leave him he likes to be where he can look out of the window. Never tried the Tee Shirt. Will do now. Thanks for the tip.
