Puppy Mill Dog Problems – Prince Alvin’s Case

Three years after we purchased a pup online, Alvin is still having health issues. We suspect these issues are based genetically. We have several reasons to believe he came from a puppy mill or a backyard breeder. We now know we rescued him from certain death. We still wonder what happened to his littermates.

Our intent was not rescue, but to purchase a healthy mixed breed puppy online. Good intention – poor execution. Viewing a picture of a cute pup online seems perfectly innocent, but can be a recipe for disaster when it’s time to buy the dog. Unless your intention is to adopt a puppy mill dog, take care to check out your online purchase thoroughly!

Introducing Prince Alvin

We found Alvin’s picture – he looked healthy – a white, fawn, and black Cockapoo mixed breed with bushy black eyebrows. Very appealing.

We thought we did everything correctly. Talked to the breeder several times with tons of questions. Arranged for the transport from the Midwest. Even during these conversations, something seemed off. There were slight conflicts in the breeder’s claims.

The Prince flew to the Northeast in the cargo section of a plane, probably the scariest and most unhealthy means of transport. He arrived with a black Labradoodle pup in a crate twice the size of Alvin’s. We picked up his little carrier and walked out to the parking lot.

Opening the crate door, we saw a tiny body with the brightest black eyes. Wet, scared, and thirsty, he was reluctant to leave his cave. We quickly attached a collar and leash and set him on a patch of grass to drink some clean water and to pee. He rode home peacefully in his new owner’s lap.

The Vet Checks Out the Prince

The day after he arrived home, Alvin visited the vet for an exam. The first indication of unhealthiness – giardia, an intestinal parasite almost impossible to eliminate. This parasite thrives in water that is infrequently changed.

He also contracted a urinary tract infection before his arrival. And he scratched himself – a lot. The vet addressed the parasite and the urinary infection with antibiotics. He could not promise to stop the incessant scratching.

We were sure we had purchased an animal with puppy mill dog problems. One who had probably been raised in dirty kennel conditions.

If you are wondering what happened to his breeder, so are we. Email contact stopped abruptly after we complained about his condition on arrival. This happened despite a signed contract with a guarantee.

The Prince Today

Thanks to proper dog housetraining and obedience training, socialization, and sound medical treatment, Alvin’s a smart, happy, though high-strung doggie. The “Prince” before his name results from his regal posture and attitude.

The Prince still scratches and licks his paws, but hot spots are uncommon. He eats special sensitive-stomach dog food because he has bouts of vomiting. His anal glands recently got infected but were finally pronounced healthy after several veterinary procedures.

The recurrent medical issues may be the result of inbreeding or his initial puppy mill dog problems, or both. But know this – we rescued him, and we would do it again if it meant saving a dog’s life.
