Puppy Training Tips

Bringing home a new canine addition to your family can be very exciting and with the proper puppy training tips it can be a very special time too. Obedience training should always be a new dog owner's number one priority. Your well trained dog is going to be the best companion you could ever wish for so be sure to train your new puppy early and let them know what is expected of them.

Potty Training Tips

Getting up in the middle of the night can be a hazardous adventure if your puppy is not properly potty trained, so teaching your little one where to potty is at the top of our training list. Teaching your puppy requires lots of patience and consistency. An important puppy training tip is to never rub the puppy's nose in its potty, it is not only cruel, it creates anxiety which leads to fear aggression when they get older.

There are a few triggers to watch out for when a puppy has to potty.

  • Waking from a nap
  • After a car ride
  • After puppy play time
  • Coming out of their crate
  • 15 to 20 minutes after your puppy eats
  • Before going to bed
  • Also include a trip outside during the night

Adult dogs relieve themselves no less than twice daily. A puppy will go many more times than that. It is recommended to use a specific area, take them there and get them used to going to that spot for potty time. Another puppy training tip is crating, which can be used as a tool for potty training however, before using one please speak to a professional about puppy crating.

Puppy Biting Tips

Who can resist the playful nibbling of your fingers and the smell of puppy breath. (Another reason puppies are so irressistable!). Puppies are so sweet and innocent so there is certainly nothing wrong with a puppy nibling your fingers. Puppies have lots of energy and also bite their sisters and brothers during puppy playtime.

It is important as they get older, they learn there is a time when biting is no longer acceptable. A simple "No" with your finger up is a common puppy training tip that should do the trick. It may take a few times but your puppy will eventually get the message. You can also redirect their playful biting with a chew toy and please do not punish your puppy physically. Its completely unnecessary and cruel.

Puppy Crate Training Tips

Dogs are den animals and used properly, crates provide your puppy with a sense of security. Normally a dog will not potty in its den, so crates can be a good tool for potty training and it also keeps them from tearing up your house while your away. Since the crate is a place of security for your puppy it is very important to never use the crate as a tool for punishment. A special puppy training tip on crating is to never leave your puppy in the crate for more than 3 hours at a time simply because their little bodies have to be relieved more often than an adult.

Once your puppy is trained it should be a place where he goes to on his own. To get the puppy started entering the crate you can toss some treats or a toy inside it. Also by putting its meals next to the crate your puppy views his crate as warm and comfy place to be. Do not force your puppy into the crate as they must go in on their own at their own pace.

Leash Puppy Training Tips

When you bring your puppy home its a good idea to get it a little collar right away. On the inside of the collar write the puppy's name and your phone number. Let the puppy get used to wearing the collar. It is recommended not to crate your puppy with its collar on or leave it unattended outside in case the collar gets stuck on something.

Once your puppy is comfortable with its new collar you can introduce the leash. If the puppy shows any resistance attach the leash to the collar and let your puppy drag it around. Be sure this is only done while its being supervised. This will get the puppy used to the weight of the leash.

To follow through with this puppy training tip pick up the leash and start walking the puppy around the inside of the house. When it no longer shows any aversion to the leash start taking the puppy outside. You want the leash to be loose and the puppy should not be pulling on it. If it starts pulling stop walking and call the puppy back to you. Repeat this any time the puppy starts to pull on the leash.

Puppy Training Should Be A Positive Experience

So now you see that puppy training is not hard. It does require dedication, patience and knowledge. These little creatures are the same as an 8 month old child, so they need to be treated gently. These puppy training tips show that a dog does not have to be spanked or physically punished to learn. Physical abuse will only create bad behaviors or aggression issues. Puppy training should be a positive experience for you and your new family member.

I agree puppies are very much like babies! I also think sometimes people bring home the new addition (puppy) without the time, energy, or know-how when it comes to taking care of the cute little fur ball!! Great Article
