Reading Dog Food Labels 2

In my last article we started looking at dog food labels and we discovered that there is a lot of marketing speak. Here's some more information on pet foods. Pet Food may be labeled as "premium," or "Ultra Premium" and even, "Mega premium" or "Gourmet". These products labels don't need to have better or human grade ingredients, and they are not held to a higher standard. These products aren't any other complete and balanced products.

Pet foods may use the word "natural." and that's okay in terms of AAFCO labeling-regulations, but, the term "Natural" doesn't mean what we think it does. This is because it doesn't have an official definition in terms of product labeling. "Natural" is not the same as "organic."

Dog food product or any product for that matter that are 100% certified organic say so. dog food with a least 95% organic ingredients may use "organic" on the label. And they can display the USDA organic seal as well.

The last category, of products has to have 70% organic ingredients, and it can say "made with organic ingredients" on the bag or can. And they can show the logo of the certification that approved them. Pet products made from less than 70% organic ingredients can not advertise organic. They are limited, only showing the product's ingredient statement.

It does give us reason to think about what they are hiding with all this secret meaning stuff. All these marketing tricks and double talk for what reason.

We can second guess the reasons, but whats the point. If these product were what they claimed to be non of it would be necessary. Wouldn't you agree?

Let's look at some of the Ingredients?

Dogs are meat-lovers, but a balanced diet for dogs, unlike cats, can include as much as 50% carbohydrates. Many experts agree, when reading dog food labels, meat should be the first ingredient. An digestible grain, such as rice, should be the second ingredient. And a vegetable should be the third ingredient.

when the term "By-product" is listed it's really an unknown ingredient. It's common knowledge that By-products are as animal parts not fit for people to eat, like bones, internal organs, animal blood, fat tissues and intestines. What should be unacceptable is, "unidentified by-products,"

Vague, words such as "meat by-products." the term meat can mean anything from roadkill to black beauty. And what we call the four D's (dead, diseased, disabled and dying), and even euthanized dogs and cats.

Thank the Lord this was not done nationally, but it was limited to, "small rural rendering plants in the pet food manufacturing chain," per

Pet owners are thus encouraged to look for specific origin of of meats contained in their dogs food.
