Service Animals - A Papillon

A service animal is any animal that is trained specifically and individually to offer some form of help to a person suffering from a form of disability. Given this definition, people may wonder what breed of dog would be suited, to this service. It may surprise some to learn that the small Papillon is considered a wise choice and good fit, for this work.

Service animals perform a number of services or tasks for their owners, based mainly on the nature of the owner’s disability. As the friendly intelligent Papillon has grown in popularity among dog lovers, it was only natural that it should be chosen to act as a service animal for its owners.

Mobility service dogs are trained to pick up objects, provide balance and pull objects, if needed, for people with mobility challenges ranging from cerebral palsy to those who are totally paralyzed. While the larger breeds have an edge, where pulling is concerned, the Papillon is more than equal to the task when it comes to all the other tasks that mobility dogs perform. These tasks include everything from picking things up from the floor to making beds and putting clothes in baskets from the dryer. Papillon are quite capable of removing clothes from the body of their owner. A trained Papillon can turn on lights, turn them off and even make up beds and operate buttons on elevators!!

Those dogs trained to be hearing ear dogs (often referred to as signal dogs) act as the ears of their owners and listen to the sounds around their owners and lead the human to the sounds that they have identified. The Papillon is blessed with a naturally alert nature, which is suited to this kind of work, making them a wonderful signal or hearing ear dog.

Seizure alert dogs need to be particularly alert and responsive dogs. They sense a change in the owner and alert him or her that “something is about to happen”, which is usually the onset of an attack or seizure. After the alert, the dog will then perform a predetermined action or set of actions, which are designed to mitigate the effects of the attack on their owners. Owners who suffer from epilepsy, or other brain malfunctions can be saved from serious harm by their Papillon seizure dogs. Dogs, such as the Papillon, who are able to sense theses changes and impending attacks are some of the most sought after.

With psychiatric service dogs, the bond between the dog and the owner could not be more important. Psychiatric patients suffering from the effects of post traumatic stress, agoraphobia, psychosis, panic attacks and more may be unable to venture outside their homes. A psychiatric dog, in this case the Papillon, with its intense bonding with its owner, can help the dog owner overcome his or her disability and venture outside their homes.

My aunt was finally allowed a dog that ended up being prescribed by her psychiatrist. The turnaround in her mental state was astounding, so I firmly believe in service dogs or all types.

Its surprising just how much noise even a little dog can make! They have been known to wake their owner after a fire has broken out. I didn't realize about all the other services they perform too. Very interesting

Very interesting article. I always thought of service dogs as big dogs. Reading this article made me realize there are special needs that a smaller dog can meet.
