Shock Collars: Do You Need One?

It seems like everyone has an opinion about shock collars: Do they work, are they humane, is it counter-productive etc...

What people should really be asking themselves when it comes to these collars is can I myself use these effectively? Shock collars are a tool, if you cant use it accurately, its best not to use one at all.

My grandma has five dogs. Every morning four (the fifth, Meg, doesn't enjoy it and stays with grandma while she feeds) run laps around the field and around the duck pond. The two young females Abby and Hannah will run a few laps and then lay in wait for Jake to come around and crash into him when he comes by. After that he becomes sullen and miserable because all his fun is ruined.

So I put a collar on the the girls, I see them lie in wait, and when Jake comes and they start after him I say leave it? Of course they don't, so the next time I say leave it and give a shock on the lowest setting, they stop and are like lolwat?

After a few times, they know when I say leave it, they better leave it. Its like I wrote in my other article about taking dogs in and out of their kennel at the animal shelter, when they go to rush out the door say wait and close the door on them. Well in this case the collar is the door shutting in their face. Its a deterrent, not a punishment. If you're using it as a punishment for not sitting or coming its not going to work, the dog should do those things because it wants to please you, not out of fear.

Most collars will have a vibrate setting. Now when all the dogs are running at night before they go in to sleep, I put the collar on Meg, the oldest because she's deaf. She wanders all over the place and while the other dogs are getting their nightly cheese she's down in the woods somewhere. When she feels the vibration she knows I'm calling her and she meanders back up to the house. Otherwise I would have to comb the fields and woods looking for her.

So like any tool, there is a proper way to use it, and a stupid way to use it. Every tool has a purpose, and used correctly with positive reinforcement you should have no trouble with it.

I must agree, I strongly oppose the use of anything that causes a dog pain. I think there are other ways to teach dogs besides pain.

If you speak to dog trainers, and take time to learn something, you will learn that the purpose of shock collars is to surprise, or grab the attention of the dog, it does not create fear or submission.

Yes tools are good if used responsibly, I agree with that. I also, think the end goal should be to work toward being able to discontinue the use of the shock collar once the desired behavior has been achieved and solidified.

Indeed. In my case, once the dogs learned attacking Jake in the field during the mornimg run (and always to far away for me to run over to stop) would be met with a suprise, hearing me shout leavit was enough for them.
