Sizing A Dog Sweater
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

So you’ve made the decision that Barkely the dog needs a sweater or a sweatshirt. There are many reasons to buy a dog sweater. Dogs with short hair in colder climates of course need extra insulation. Some working dogs may need protection form the elements such as rain or snow. One reason that is not commonly thought of is that a dog sweater or coat or sweatshirt can prevent a longer haired dog from shedding inside the house. There sre also dog coats that come with floatation devices built in for our meritime canine friends. Mostly, I think it's becuase your pup looks so adorable in a dog sweater that you could just scream!

The question is however, how do you make sure that ol Barkley gets the right size of dog sweater or sweatshirt. I mean you don’t want him to not able to breathe because that cute little sweater you got him is choking off his air supply! On the other hand you don’t want it so big and floppy that he’s tripping over it or heaven forbid going potty in it!

Sizing can be a bit of a brain teaser sometimes because the sizes are not standardized as are human sweaters and sweatshirts. Therefore you will have to do some measuring and then compare up your figures with the manufacturer’s sizes.

The way to do this is by measuring four different places on your dog. Across his back, from neck to tail. Around the chest area. Around his neck and also the girth of his chest between the front legs.

Again there are no exact sizes in dog clothing. A lot of companies will tag their garments as “small” “Medium” and “Large”. Your question of course is compared to what?! Some of the better manufacturers will try and help you by putting some examples of the type of breed the garment is for on the packaging. However this can also be a bit confusing. The only real way to make sure is to measure your dog and then get some specific sizing from the manufacturer.

Worst case scenario is to go ahead and take your tape measure down to the pet store and measure a few Dog sweaters yourself! In any case this is not rocket science, just make sure that the dog sweater is not to tight or to lose and go for it! Then get out the camera and start sending all those cute pictures to most of your extended family.
