Sometimes Dogs Ned Special Love And Attention

Dogs are special animals. I have a six year old German Shepard named Sparky. He is extremely intelligent and smart. Late last year, I experienced a strange situation with Sparky. The problem was he couldn't close his mouth and was drooling heavily. So, I rushed him to the vet. The vet administered all types of test and he even stayed overnight for observation. When the vet called me, he said he couldn't figure out what was wrong with Sparky. And when I went to pick Sparky up the vet told me that he has heard of this type of issue but never saw it in any of his patients, then he referred Sparky to a nearby vet specialist.

So I made the appointment and took Sparky to see the vet specialist. After being tested, observed and given water to drink so we knew that his tongue was working properly the vet specialist said that Sparky had Trigeminal Neuritis, also known as mandibular paralysis. The cause of the disorder is unkown and the paralysis of the jaw muscles causes an inability to close the mouth. Then the specialist said I would have feed Sparky by hand until he can eat again on his own again. I then asked how do I that? Sparky has dangerous teeth. Then the vet showed me how to put on the latex glove to feed Sparky. She also gave him some food because she said that he looked hungry and he ate it all up. Then she showed me the special food to buy for him until he recovered. Then I asked how long will it be before Sparky returns to normal. She replied that it shouldn't be too long. Then before we left her office she gave me her contact information and said if he takes a turn for the worse or if I have any questions to call the office.

I used the late gloves that the vet specialist recommended and the special food and I fed Sparky by hand for almost two weeks until he completely recovered.

When Sparky couldn't close his mouth and eat normally I felt so sorry for him because there was nothing until I do besides doing what the vet specialist recommended. I was so happy when Sparky returned to normal and could eat by himself.

There are times when your dog need more than food or water. Sometimes they need that extra attention and caring which they expect and rely on from their owners. My german shepard is a terrific dog and more than that he is my buddy. There is nothing that I wouldn/t do for him especially when it comes to his health. Be more than willing to assist your pet in their time of need.

I would be lost without my Lab, and if she needs extra, so be it. Now, do you have any tips for making her not want to mow me over every time I get out the vacuum? lol

maybe your Lab doesn't like the vacuum cleaner or the noise it makes. maybe you can put the dog in another room or outside when the vacuum cleaner is being used.

She seeks it out just to mow me over. Funny

I agree our K9 friends need more than our companionship. I have 2 Labradors and one Lucy needs her ears cleaned almost every day without doing it she gets a wax build up that turns nasty and drives her mad with itch. We only have her a few months and it took a while to work out the problem with the vet. I don't mind doing it and she seems to know I'm helping her as she waits for me to administer the treatment.

Thanks Maria, unfortunately there are individuals who desert or dump their pets just because they have a problem. My sincere wish is that more individuals would take care of their pets in bad times not only in the good times.
