Spca - Society for the Prevention Of Cruelty to Animals

I am sure if I write about these wonderful, caring and feeling people you all will know who I'm talking about. I have another acronym for SPCA, it is Special People Creating Awareness; and anyone that does this for animals has my vote and backing.

From my articles, I think by now you are aware I have a close affinity with dogs especially, but also with any animal. Wither they be big or small, have fur or not, ugly or pretty, clawed or un-clawed, happy or sad; (hold on I'm talking about animals, not women!) strike the last one; any animal, has a piece of my heart.

I made a visit to the local SPCA pound to have a look and see. What did I see? Hundreds of dogs, cats, goats and donkeys, all awaiting a good home, or for their owners to collect them. The sad story, if not claimed or a home found they face euthanasia. I, accompanied by a volunteer, walked about the area of the cages containing dogs. My heart went out to them all, I had told them at reception “I merely wanted to have a look, not adopt”. They still sent the assistant, I think for the, “if I changed my mind.”

The volunteer soon discovered I wanted to spend some time with the dogs, and left me alone. Some dogs would jump against the fence, with a plea of “take me with, please! take me with” these received a good scratch behind the ear and a head rub, and as much love as I could give them through a fence.

The other more timid, try to hide at the back of the cage type, I spent more time with. They appeared so frightened and faint-hearted, that any passer-by would not even consider adopting. Some growled and show their teeth, others merely cringed and tried to ignore me. I spent time encouraging them to approach the fence, talking to them in a soft voice, being friendly and showing them even if the snarled and growled, I was not going anywhere and still wanted to make friends. I had a tremendous amount of success with these, and got many to approach, wag their tails, some to the fence, and with a lick of the pre-offered hand a friendship made.

The volunteer had obviously been keeping a watchful eye on me, and later approached for a follow-up chat. I asked about the amount of dogs that get adopted, and I'm pleased that so many do. He was quite forthright in his opinion, that many that I had spent time with had little chance of adoption due to their timidness. This saddened me, as so many of those dogs would turn out as wonderful loving pets. Abandoned by owners, for what reason, God only knows, these poor dogs are merely looking for a home and a loving relationship with an owner.

Believe it, some are so well-trained, that after connecting with them, I could get them to sit and lie down on command. Is it not sad, that these loving pets of someone in the past, are now condemned to death? I asked if I could visit again, and they extended an invitation “for any time”.

My wife is still convinced that I have some special connection with dogs, as those that bite and are aggressive, will come to me as friends. I had the nickname of Bulldog at school, maybe there is a good reason for it?

If you want a pet, visit your local S.P.C.A. a Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or as I like to call them Special People Creating Awareness. There are so many good dogs, or cats, looking for a loving home, help them find one, and if you cannot offer a home, give money, they need it.

AnnMarie

This is a very moving article, Rob. You are the expert of writing what you think :) I am always so depressed when I visit an animal shelter. I want to take them all home. Instead, I have fostered animals and helped when I can. I have found good homes for any I fostered so I figure that's a feather in my cap. I like that our local SPCA branch became a No Kill shelter a few years ago. Too many horror stories about pets whose owners wanted to reclaim them only to find their pet was euthanized. I'm sure it gets pretty overcrowded though. I'm presuming you know The Animal Rescue site, where everyone can Click for Paws with no obligation and the sponsors (I guess) make a donation every time you click. You can click once in any 24 hour period. If more people did something this simple every day it would be a tremendous help for needy animals. I have it Bookmarked at the top to remind me to do this as often as I can.

Thanks AnnMarie, yes the click for paws sites well known, the problem in our country there are just too many strays, and too many litters born on the street. I feel for the hounds, a visit to any dump site will normally have a pack or two waiting for the rubbish dump truck for lunch. Their weight and lack of body fat is horrifying, ribs that look like piano keys, sores and too sad to describe, these are what get the most euthanased in the shelters, but still my heart bleeds for them. So many people give others pets for presents, and the recipients don't really want them, these end up in shelters and hell its not even their fault.

I loved this article Rob. Both our pets came from the refuge and they're amazing, awesome and wonderful. I so relate to your story. I love cats and hadn't had one for our whole marriage as my husband (the farm boy) believed cats belonged in the barn. I believed that a cat not in the house was ferrel. Well, last year I took my friend for a birthday lunch and after we'd eaten she said "now I want to go and cuddle cats!" and so we did. We spent the afternoon sitting in the cat cage and I fell in love with 'my cat' and brought photos home. My husband encouraged me to go back for her and despite us leaving for over seas I bought her and the refuge kept her for an extra 3 months for me free of charge until I could come back. Now she's part of the furniture (literally) and a part of every article I write. I'll post the photo on FB!

Great article Rob, Yes, the SPCA is a great organization for helping our four legged family members. I also volunteer at a shelter and they have people that foster dogs. They even will find homes for dogs with people that are out of the state which is really win-win for all. Thank you so much for your compassion for the canines!

Great article Rob. It is sad to walk in to a shelter knowing that some of the animals will never find a home.

How true Daniel, I will be spending more time there, if not to make their last few days loved ones.
