The first step in training a dog with aggressive tendencies is to establish yourself as the alpha dog. You must comprehend that it is in the nature of a dog to react with aggression out of fearfulness and domination. You establish yourself as an alpha dog by making sure the dog is, not greeted first, fed last and is not allowed in rooms that are off limits, such as the bedroom etc. Not only is this good dog training advice but it also works with puppy training.
The second thing you need to do is rule out any medical reasons for your dogs' aggression by having him checked by your vet. Many times dogs show aggression as a result of a medical issue which when corrected the aggression disappears.
Regular exercise of your dog or puppy will release any stored energy and will help create a harmonious mental state.
You should train your dog or puppy early on what is or is not acceptable to chew on. This is done by replacing items they want to chew on with a bone or a toy. You should keep plenty of acceptable toys or bones that your puppy can chew on around that way they will not be tempted to chew on the items they are not supposed to chew on.
Aggression often comes from the dog or puppy thinking they are rated higher than they really are. Dog owners often give mixed signals to their dogs by letting them sleep with them, by growling when someone gets close to their food, by protecting their toys through barking and growling. By letting the dog do these things they are letting the dog set the boundaries.
All of this can be overcome by positive reinforcement, showing the dog the boundaries and showing your dog that you are the boss.
Aggressive dogs should be muzzled as a protection when the dog is taken out in the community and to rule out any struggles with your dog.
By establishing yourself as the alpha dog you can remove any aggression that is based on dominance
Set boundaries with your dog, clarify that is not allowed to bite on hands or clothing,
Neutering or spaying your dog can help reduce the dogs aggressive behavior or territorial dominance.
Always keep people safe by promptly restraining your dog until his aggression problem is resolved.
Were you aware that aggression is the number one reason for the euthanization of dogs. If these dogs or puppys would have had someone spend some time with them and show them positive reinforcement the outcome may have ended up totally different.
Remember that proper dog training cannot be accomplished in a three or four week period. It is a lifelong process, accomplished through positive reinforcement.
Great article, dealing with an aggressive dog really needs to be handled in a appropriate way. Thank you
