Are you searching for an effective way to stop dog barking? Yes, you love your dog, but it is the excessive barking that you seriously can't stand! You can stop dog barking with the help of a helpful dog behaviourist guideline.

First and foremost, in order to stop your pet from barking excessively, you will need to understand exactly why your dog is barking. It is important to know that dogs bark for a variety of reasons. For example, puny breeds such as Maltese and Yorkies generally bark because they just love the sound of their own barking. While German Shepherds and Doberman are dogs that are guard-specific barkers – these dogs will only bark when they perceive danger/threat. Sporting breeds such as bloodhounds will only bark when they perceive quarry.

Okay, putting aside all breed specifics; a dog behaviourist will tell you that there are situations where all dogs (regardless of their breed) bark. Dogs bark when:

• They feel lonely

• View other animals

• It needs to relieve itself

• It is thirsty or hungry

• It senses that someone is close or wrong

• It wants to play

There is absolutely no need to stop dog barking if your dog is barking for the aforementioned reasons because your dog is only trying to communicate its needs or wants. In these situations, it is better to satisfy your dog's needs instead of insisting that it cease trying to communicate with you.

You should stop dog barking if you find out that your dog is not barking for the earlier mentioned reasons, your dog may be trying to actually bully you into doing exactly what it wants you to do.

A good example is Rover. Rover's owner, Jenny is sitting down quietly and working at her computer. Her dog, Rover, has decided that it is time for fun and game. Rover picks up his Frisbee and drops it on Jenny's table. She then chooses to ignore him. After sometime, Rover nudges her hand and begins to bark loudly. When Jenny tells him to "shut it up!" he still continues barking and nips her – nipping her is his own way of telling her "That's for yelling at me!" You do not need a professional dog behaviourist to tell that Rover thinks that he is the leader of the pack!

If your dog is trying to control you, it means that you have respect issues to deal with. Your dog erroneously thinks that he is the Alpha-dog and is barking in order to control your actions. In this case, you can stop dog barking by simply putting your dog in its place.

Any dog behaviourist will tell you that the actions you display will demonstrate that you are the alpha-dog or leader of the pack and that you will not be bullied into doing what he/she wants. As soon as your dog knows this, he will respect your authority and be well behaved. You can get more tips from a good dog behaviourist guide, which you can find online.
