Hunting with your dog can be a very rewarding experience. Watching your dog hunt, doing what they were bred to do is a wonderful scene. Hunting dogs are one of the few breeds that still get to do what they were bred to do. The American Kennel Club also holds field trials and tests to judge your dog on how well they perform. If you've never hunted with your dog before, but it's something that interest you, take a look at the American Kennel Club website. It goes over all the rules and how to get started. If it's something you just want to do for fun, there are several products on the market that can help you get started. Lets take a look at some of the different breeds.

First we have the Retrievers. These dogs are usually used for finding the birds, flushing them out of the brush, and retrieving downed birds. They are also great for duck hunting because their coats can with stand the cold waters, and they are made for swimming with their webbed toes and otter like tails. Retrievers are breeds such as the Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Curly Coated Retriever, and the Flat Coated Retriever. Though these breeds are usually used for flushing, I have heard of a few 'pointing' labs as well.

Next we have the Spaniels. These dogs are also usually used for finding, flushing, and retrieving the birds. Some can also be taught to point. These dogs are mostly used for upland game birds, but some are also being used on ducks. Spaniels include; American Water Spaniel, Boykin Spaniel, Brittany Spaniel, Clumber Spaniel, Cocker Spaniel, English Cocker Spaniel, English Springer Spaniel, Field Spaniel, Irish Water Spaniel, Sussex Spaniel, and the Welsh Springer Spaniel.

Then we have the Setters. These dogs are usually used for finding & pointing game. Some will also retrieve. These dogs are used for upland game birds. These breeds include; English Setter, Gorden Setter, Irish Red and White Setter, and the Irish Setter.

Last but not least we have the Pointers. These dogs are used for finding and pointing upland game. Some will also retrieve. In warm weather there are some that can also be used on ducks. These breeds tend to be pretty versatile. Breeds include; German Shorthaired Pointer, German Wirehaired Pointer, Pointer or English Pointer, Spinone Italiano, Vizsla, Weimaraner, and the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon.

As you can see there is a wide range of hunting dog breeds to choose from. You certainly want to do your research on them, a good place to start is at the American Kennel Club. You also want to look for breeders who breed for the field type. If you get one for show, you might not get what you were wanting. Talking to breeders and such that hunt themselves will help you in getting a puppy that will most likely succeed in the hunting field. They will be able to see which pup has more of the instinct.
