Motivation can sometimes be difficult especially in today's busy world. Though there are several different types of motivation, today I'll be talking about motivating yourself to work with and train your dog. Who knows, maybe it will help you with motivation elsewhere too. People don't always have the motivation to go out and work with their dog. There's too many other things to do or they'd rather just relax.
In today's dog training world, there are several methods of training you can use. If you're one of those people who would rather relax than train your dog, clicker training would probably be best for you. You want to pick the right training that is going to work for both you and the dog. Why would Clicker training be better for people who like to relax? Well you don't have to do a whole lot. Clicker training is all about getting your dog to think for himself. You can sit on the couch with clicker and treats on hand and just wait for your dog to do something you like such as sit or going and laying on his bed. Then you'd click and reward him for it.
Picking a form of training both you and your dog enjoy will help greatly in the motivation area. If your both having fun with the training, you'll both be looking forward to getting out there and doing something. Once you have your method of training that works for both of you, your half way there! Sometimes just this isn't enough to motivate people, so lets take a look at a few other things I love to do to get motivated.
First thing I love doing is watching motivational training movies. These can be DVD's you've bought or simple clips found on YouTube. They can be of very well trained dogs or of dogs in training. This in itself usually really gets me motivated to get to training. I love training anyways though, I did choose Dog Training as my Career.
If this isn't enough for you to get your motivation going then just get up, grab a toy and start playing a simple game with your dog. Just doing this in itself seems to put your mind in a different place and get you ready to go work with your dog. Play for a few minutes, then get your training supplies together and start your lessons.
Another thing to keep in mind is to keep your training sessions short. For some reason a lot of people think working with their dog has to take an hour or more. There is no need for that and can actually do worse than good. A training session can be as short as 1 minute and as long as 30 minutes. Try not to go over 30 minutes though.
If your really having trouble motivating yourself, and your using treats in training, one thing I like to do is just grab a certain number of treats. Lets say 5 or 10. Have your dog do something for each one, then your done. Your training session is over and you still worked in a session. If your not using treats, then have your dog do something 5-10 times, then end the session there. It's that easy!
