The German Shepherd, A Special Kind Of Breed

Hi my name is Amy and I live in a small rural town in Northern Vermont along with my husband of 15 years and three children ages 13, 10 & 8 and our loyal German Shepherd Jake. I LOVE German Shepherds! We've always had a Shepherd as part of the family. They are devoted protectors and family companions all in one.

We named our German Shepherd Jake. He is a very big dog...about 90 pounds at 10 months old. To give you an idea as to how tall Jake is, we purchased a garbage canister that is 2 feet 4 inches tall. It has a built in cover with a sensor that opens the lid when you run your finger by it. Just recently Jake has learned to run his nose by the sensor to open the lid and enabling him to help himself to the trash! This is an issue we addressed immediately as we don't want our trash spread all over the floor, but it gives you an idea as to how tall he is and how quickly he learns (even the inappropriate behavior!).

As previously mentioned, my husband and I have always had German Shepherds starting at an early age. A GSD is known as an aggressive breed, but as long as you show him who has the authority as a puppy in a calm, but firm and consistent way, you will, in my opinion, have a strong, loyal companion for as long as you have him. If a Shepherd thinks he is stronger minded then his owner he won't listen!

Before picking Jake up and bringing him to his new home, we wanted to make sure we had a name for him...as you already know we named him Jake. We came up with his name from a song I always sang along with on the radio when I was a little girl, Feed Jake by Pirates of the Mississippi. The chorus says “Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I die before I wake, feed Jake, he's been a good dog. My best friend right through it all, if I die before I wake, feed Jake”. We all thought this would prove to be a good name for our new addition.

We picked up Jake right after Christmas 2012. We drove about 2 hours south in a snow storm to his previous owner to pick him up and make him part of our family. Our two oldest kids went with us and we brought a box and a blanket to put Jake in on the way home. He did get sick once or twice on our way home, but the second he entered his new home we could tell he liked it. A little skiddish at first, but not for long. Jake continues to learn and is an important part of our family. I love my shepherd!
