Have you ever stopped to think what your favorite pet means to you and your family? They become a part of your family, and as you get older they become the children that you no longer have at home. You get to learn all of their wants and needs by the way they come to you. My youngest shitzu, the girl, Candy will scratch at the back door to go out to potty, but the next time she may go and scratch at the door to get my attention. She will then look up to the counter where the food and water is and by doing this she is telling me that she wants some food or water. Cookie my older shitzu when he wants to go out to the bathroom he will come to me with one of his babies (stuffed animals) in his mouth and will get my attention and head towards the door.
Dogs are much smarter than some people give them credit. Clicker training as some of my articles are on is how dogs and animals that are in the movies are trained.
We had another shitzu that we had got for our son when he was around 7 years old. My son was an only child and he considered this little shitzu as his little brother. This dog's name was Oreo, because he was a black and white shitzu. He was such a special dog. When Oreo was about 2 years old he got hit by a car. I still remember taking him to the veterinarian hospital and seeing his big brown eyes looking at me in pain. He did not yelp or whine although he was in serious pain. The vet operated on his leg, although he never gained use of that back leg again. He learned to get around good on his three legs. In later years he went to live with my son. He lived to be 16 years old. As he got older he developed kidney stones which were very painful for him. His little body just continued to break down and my son had to make the very hard choice of putting him to sleep so he would no longer be suffering. My son loved him so much that he still keeps Oreo's ashes in a box on his mantle.
This goes to show how our animals can grow old and die of old age just as we do.
Proper training of your dog will help insure you and your dog will have a happy healthy life.
My Dad still has a picture of our dog we grew up with. It has been 40 years since Roo Dog died of old age and her picture is on the mantle with all the rest of "us kids".
Good dogs, bad dogs, any dogs you have to have one in your life.
Thank you all, yes we all know the sorrows of losing our sweet little dogs or our babies.
Great article Sherry, It is really joy for me to have my dog in my life. Thank you
Great atricle. They are a joy to have around. It is very hard to let them go. I had to put my Golden Retreiver to sleep last year and it still hurts. I have his ashes in a oak box that I made and it sits by the TV. Thanks
I lost my Pekingese Mini, but she died by natural death. That was a very painful experience and it still is, after more than a year. I can only imagine, how hard was bringing such a decision to put your beloved dog to sleep. Our pets give to us great joy and love over the years and at the moment when they are no longer with us; we feel a very big emptiness. It is enough only to remember, how great was their joy, when they see us. No one in this world can't be so happy to see us like our dogs. Very nice and touching article. Thank you Sherry.
It wasn't until after I lost our dog that I realised what a big impact she had on my life. Even driving into the garage and hearing... silence! was very strange and unsettling for a while. I enjoy having a new boy around now!
