Tips on Crate House Training A Puppy

Ideas For Toilet Training A Puppy

Many new dog owners want their puppy to have a safe space to go at night and during the day. Usually new dog owners will get a crate or paper house for their new dog. While this is a great idea for a puppy, your new pet may be apprehensive about going inside the crate. Here are a few tips on how to crate train a puppy.

Getting the right size

First, always get a crate that is slightly larger than the dog, but not excessively large. A crate that is too large will encourage the puppy to soil the area, while a space that is too small may frighten the dog. For a puppy that is going to grow into a larger dog, buy the adult-size crate with the divider that can be moved back as the dog grows into the space.

Outside

When you bring the crate home, make it into a welcoming atmosphere. Your puppy will be more interested in venturing inside if the crate contains toys, blankets, and other items that will make it feel more welcome. Encourage your new puppy to go inside and praise him when he begins to venture inside the space. The worst thing that you can do at this point is to force the dog inside or shut him inside immediately. Give your puppy some time to get used to the crate being present before closing the door.

Inside

After the crate has been sitting around for a while, encourage your puppy to go inside. If he is reluctant, you may need to pick him up and put him inside the crate and then lock the door. Be sure that the crate has the dog's favorite toys or other ways for him to amuse himself. Chances are, your puppy will not be very happy at first. Leave him inside for 15 minutes and then let him out, praising him and showing him affection. What you are doing at this stage is encouraging your puppy to have positive associations with the crate.

More time

As time goes by, you can start leaving your dog in the crate for longer periods of time. Remember that your puppy may not be housetrained, so take him out every hour if this is the case. You may also need to bring treats in order to encourage your puppy to go inside the crate at first. Generally, dogs will start to see the crate as being their own space and start to enjoy having quiet naps inside the crate.

Accidents

During the crate training period, the worst thing that you could do is to treat the crate like a punishment. When your puppy has misbehaved, you may need to put your puppy away while you clean up the mess. However, you should put him in a back room or another space. This will make sure that your dog does not associate the crate with being punished.

Success

These are some tips for crate training a puppy. Within a few weeks, your puppy will start to love going inside the crate and begin to see it as their own personal space.
