Training Your Dog With A Crate

A dog crate can provide a space where your dog can be secure and happy. It can work well as a training tool for good dog behavior.

These days it is very hard to find a motel that will accept dogs, howeve there are a lot more motels that will allow dogs in a crate. When you are renting an apartment the apartment personel are more likely to rent to you if you have a dog that has been trained and uses a crate.

Crates give your dog a safe, warm place to stay and crates can make training of your dog much easier. When you use a crate you can contain your dog's chewing on your furniture or other off limit items. Traveling is safer for you and your dog.

Most dogs will not eliminate in the area where they sleep, eat or play. With the use of the crate the dog can learn to control his tendency to eliminate until he is allowed to get out of the crate This helps prevent slip ups when you are not able to watch your dog every minute. Using a crate with a regular eating and exercise schedule will make training of your dog a lot easier.

Using a crate will also help break your dog from chewing on your furniture. Being kept in his crate the dog can only chew on the toys and trinkets that you give him.

No dog is too old to be crate trained in fact many older dogs learn quicker than younger dogs. Let your dog investigate the crate, let him go in and out for treats. You should make the crate a soft and comfortable place for your dog, let the dog smell of the inside of the crate with the door open. Once your dog gets used to the crate he will want to retreat to his crate at times during the day when the door is left open. He may want to take his special toy or treat and go into his crate, or retreat to it for a nap. Occassionally throughout the day drop small pieces of treats into the crate and your dog will learn that he can find edible treats in the crate and will associate good things with his crate.

Never use a crate as punishment for your dog, as this causes the dog to fear going into the crate, although brief periods of time can be used if your dog gets over excited or starts nipping at people.

Always be sure your dog has gone to the potty before placing him into the crate.

When beginning with your dogs the below are recommended timelines for leaving your dog in the crate for him to get used to it:

9-10 weeks for around 30- 60 minutes a day

11-14 weeks 1 - 3 hrs

15- 16 weeks 3-4 hrs

and 17 + weeks for around 4-6 hours dogs should not be crated longer than 6 hours if possible, other than overnight. These times are for daytime training of your dog.

Always make sure you dog has sufficient daily exercise to keep your dog healthy. A small amount of exercise in the backyard is not enough.

If you need to leave your dog for longer times than the 6 hour maximum there are alternate methods. You can block off a small to medium sized room that has a non-pourous floor, such as a kitchen, large hallway or a bathroom. Put your dog's crate in the room with the door open and if you need to be gone for an extended period of time you can put their food and water at the other end of the room along with several thicknesses of newspaper 3-4 layers thick . It is better to use a doggie gate or approved childs gate to block the area off instead of shutting a large door on the dog. The dog will feel less confined if they can see out past where he is confined. Make sure in the room you have chosen that you have removed from the room any objects or things that could be harmful for your dog. Also make sure the dog has his favorite toys to chew on and play with so they do not get into other mischief.

Training your dog with a crate will help create a healthy and happy dog, as long as they get the exercise they need and it will make your daily life with your dog be more serene.
