Training Your Labrador Retriever- How to Train a Dog

There are many schools of thought on how best to train a dog. Training your Labrador Retriever should follow most of the standard methods. In the past, trainers used a lot of negative reinforcement techniques to force the dog to do their bidding. These methods can work if tempered with kindness. Since the millennium, the trend for how to train a dog have shifted to more humane and positive methods. There is no more pull and choke but now is show and reward. There have been multiple studies done that show two things, the dogs learn much more readily when reward training is used and the dogs will retain the information taught for much longer. Using this method also makes for a much more rewarding experience for both the dog and the trainer.

Psychology uses the term operant conditioning for this type of training. When training your Labrador Retriever operant conditioning works exceptionally well. There are four basic tenants of Operant Conditioning. The conditioning can be positive or negative and be a reward or a punishment. This give us positive reward, positive punishment, negative reward or negative punishment. In this model punishment is not thought of in the normal sense but is actually anything that will decrease a behavior. The negative term means that something is taken away.

Looking at this Operant Conditioning model a bit more closely it provides some insight into how dogs learn. If a dog (Labs love to do this) finds that there is something good on the counter, they have just been positively rewarded and will make every attempt to repeat the process. Negative reinforcement shows up in the older style where a dog doing the wrong thing was forcefully jerked away by its choke collar. A negative reward would be if the dog jumped up on the counter expecting a reward only to find a pristine surface and nothing to show for it.

How does this relate to how to train a dog and specifically training your Labrador Retriever? In order to get the point of your training into your dogs mind, you need to associate good things with certain behaviors. Are you training to get your Lab to walk nicely at heal? Reward the correct behavior and ignore the wrong behavior, If it is pulling to get to another dog or the next mailbox post, use negative reinforcement, turn around and walk the other way. The dog doesn't get rewarded for the wrong behavior and will get rewarded ( you are providing treats for the right behavior) for the correct behavior.

I could go on and on with additional examples of how to train a dog. When training your Labrador Retriever keep it fun, use lots of treats to start with until the behavior you are teaching is set in your Lab's brain then taper off and surprise it with a random treat. This will keep its mind working and make for a much more rewarding relationship with your Lab.
