I have a 6 yr old female Siberian Husky that weighs 52 lbs named Aurora. I have a 1 year old male Alaskan Malamute that weighs 98 lbs named Apollo. For all you dog owners out there, you know we all have one thing in common. And that my friends is PATIENCE. haha.
I seem to always be comparing my dogs to my friends kids. Because in an essance they are MY kids. When they do things I want them to, I give them loving or treats. (Not to be confused when a 3 year old is being potty trained and is rewarded with a gummy bear). And when they do things I don't like I showed them what they did, tell them no and put them in a corner. (Again not to be confused when 3 year old does something they shouldn't and are told they will be put in time out for 3 mins) But how do we get to the point of actually training a dog to do the right thing? And disciplining them when they does the wrong thing?
Most people say it just comes to me, or they have been around dogs there whole lives. Well what about the people who don't have any expireince in this and they really want to add a new fur kid to their home? I raised Aurora by myself but when my fiance and I decied we wanted a bigger family and we got Apollo, we were both in for a treat. He had always had a family dog, but Apollo was HIS first dog so he understood he needed to take a different rold in his life.
The first thing that is tricky is there is a huge difference between raising a female pup vs a male pup. In essance you have to train them the same way, but how you teach them and how you act towards them must be different. Take example Rory and Apollo. Rory is 52 lbs so controling her is very easy. But Apollo is a 98 lbs moose that knows how big he is. He throws around his weight in essance to control the family, the pact(as they see it). It's very easy to give in to them but thats the worst thing to do! You must take control and be the Alpha of the pact within your household. The biggest thing you must do is take control at a very early age. This is what we did with Apollo. This helped him understand his role in the house and it helped him understand Rory. So a fight was not to occur :) With proper training, a blissful home can be yours :)
Great article, providing training for your pup is one of the best thing you can get you and your dog. Thank you
