Holidays are for relaxing with your loved ones and spending quality time with them. For many people that includes their dogs. More and more people are choosing to take their dogs on vacation with them. Travelling with your dog requires a bit of planning. You want to arrive at your destination in good time with everyone in the holiday spirit - including your dog. Make sure your dog is fit and healthy for the journey and feed him two to three hours before you leave.
If you plan to travel by car, ensure your dog is accustomed to travelling in the car prior to the time you need to leave for your vacation. Take him for journeys in the lead up to the vacation to find out if he has any problem with it. Some dogs travel well but some do not. It is better to find out beforehand if your dog is not a good traveller. If you find he does not travel well, have a word with your vet. He may be able to give him something to make him more comfortable during the journey. Make sure you have your dog safely ensconced in the car. I have a crate for my two dogs but you can get carriers, seats or seatbelts so they do not move around too much and distract the driver. Have water handy and make sure you stop often enough to exercise your dog. Take a comfort toy or blanket for him to cuddle up with.
If you plan to travel by air, check out the airlines pet policy beforehand. Your dog will need to be microchipped and have all the vaccinations required. You will need all the relevant documentation for your dog. Some airlines will allow him to travel with you in the cabin but most airlines stipulate that they have to travel in a special hold. Before you check your dog in, make sure he has been exercised. This will help to keep him calm. Some airlines have rules about the type of carrier your dog can be put in. They need to be well ventilated and have enough space for your pet to move around in. Be sure to check this out before you go.
Travelling with your dog can be a bit daunting and it could be a bit stressful for you and your pet. On the other hand, leaving him with family or friends or boarding kennel will cause stress for both of you. Given a choice I am sure he would prefer to be with you sharing your adventure.
