Veterinary Terminology Explained!

Acanthomatous epulis, blepharitis, bicipital tenosynovitis…most likely you have no idea what these things are because this is a typical veterinary terminology. Don’t worry, you are not alone. The usual reaction I get from using terms like these are, “Umm….what?” or “Oh my gosh! That sounds terrible! Is he going to live?”

Many times, vets use all sorts of jargon to describe either what condition your dog has, or what type of surgical procedure your four-legged friend needs. As any parent would want to know what their child needs or is suffering from, so do dog owners! If you ask your vet, I am sure they will explain it further to you. But usually, there just seems to be another veterinary terminology that comes up that you want to know about; your vet keeps on using this unknown veterinarian terminology.

Veterinary terminologyTherefore, if you are looking for a veterinarian guide that provides an extensive list of veterinarian terminology and explanations, that wasn’t written for a vet, I suggest the Dictionary of Veterinary Terms: Vet-speak Deciphered for the Non-veterinarian written by veterinarian Jennifer Coates.

I like it because…

It is written by a certified veterinarian.

Meant for non-vet people or people beginning their studies in the veterinary sciences. Meaning, you don’t have to spend 15 minutes looking up a term only to find that you have to look up another term from the description which leads you to look up another term and so on…nope, just plain and simple English!

It is listed alphabetically. This is super helpful if your vet gives you a specific name, you can just look it up in a matter of seconds. It is a reference dictionary after all!

The descriptions are SUPER easy to understand and it is written very clearly.

Talks about certain medications and the concerns associated with them.

Provides weight and measurement conversions in the back.

It covers pretty much every vet term that you could possibly ever hear. (about 5,600 terms, more or less!)

This book is GREAT for:

Anyone who owns an animal

Anyone who works with animals

Anyone starting their studies in veterinary sciences
