Why is it important to crate train your puppy anyway? Well, in my opinion, it is very important and also a very helpful part of their every day training.
It might cost a little bit of money to purchase a crate for your new puppy, but it is definitely worth it in the long run. Especially if you are the proud owner of a bull dog puppy or plan on being one. I have a purebred Old English Bulldog and a mixed Old English Bulldog/husky/yellow lab and they are both very good at chewing things up very quickly.
Once you have trained your pup to stay peacefully in his or her crate, you will no longer have to worry about things, bad things...I might add, happening while you are away at work or shopping.
What has that dog done now?
While you are gone, what is your puppy doing? Hmmm. Well, what could it be doing while it has free reign of the house, unsupervised?
- Chewing the furniture
- Chewing up your other shoes
- Eating something that could be poisonous
- Going potty on your floors
If you leave your puppy unsupervised even for a little while, it may end up costing you a new couch, shoes, and a lot of grief. While you are away your puppy will probably get bored...and what do bored puppies do? Why they chew on stuff of course!
Left alone to their own devices, a puppy can be quite destructive to anything in its path. I found this out many years ago. It cost me having to replace the door frame in my kitchen, new kitchen blinds, and also my kitchen table had suspicious teeth marks on its legs.
We thought our puppy was pretty good, so we left him alone in the kitchen for a couple of hours while we went shopping...our little shopping trip got even more expensive when we got home.
I am just glad he didn't get into anything poisonous to a dog such as certain house plants. Thankfully we didn't have any that he could reach in the kitchen since some plants can get a dog very sick or even be fatal to them.
Benefits of Crate Training
- Puppy cannot chew on furniture
- You will still have your other shoes
- Your puppy cannot eat something it should not be eating
- Puppies usually will not go potty while in their crate
Properly crate training your puppy will be one of the best things you can do for not only your puppy but for you as well. Just think of your defenseless couch, chairs, and your poor shoes! Would you rather spend money on a crate for your puppy or spend money on a new couch for example?
I do believe a crate would be a bit cheaper than a new couch! I have four dogs that I've raised from puppies, not to mention a few other dogs that I have had in the past and have crate trained all of them since the little kitchen episode I mentioned earlier.
Once I discovered how to crate train puppies I would not want to be without a crate, especially with a new bull dog puppy. They are very powerful chewers! They can destroy something in just a few minutes.
