What do you do when family and friends bring their dogs into your home? Does your dog handle a visit from a friend or family members dog well? Here are a few tips that I want to share with you. They have worked well for us and they will for you too!

Have the dogs meet in the street outside of your home on neutral territory. Walk the dogs together around the block together it helps them bond. And it start to make them a part of a pack. Leave a short lease on them for a while, just in case things go awry and you have to control one or both of them.

If you are coming over have a crate set up in advance for the visiting dogs to use. They will feel safer and the crate is a wonderful tool to use for time outs when it gets to crazy or noisy.

Never leave the dogs unattended, you are asking for trouble and you will eventually get it. If there are dog toys make sure there are enough for all the dogs. If they start trying to play take away from another dog. cut the game short don't allow it to escalate.

Never feed the dogs in the same room at the same time and expect to have no trouble. Just feed the resident dog in his or her normal feeding spot. Then, feed the visiting dogs while the resident dog is outside doing it's business while the visiting dogs are eating.

After enough time has passed for the visitor's the finish eating. Take them out and bring the resident dog in.

A cause of friction between dogs often happens when someone rings a doorbell or knocks on the door. The dogs rush to see who's at the door and before you know it a fight breaks out. Don't set yourself up for this.

I would leave a 3 ft leash on the dogs at all times, give yourself a chance of grabbing them and stopping them before they all rush the door. Walk them away from the door make them sit. Don't open the door until the dogs are under your control.

If there are small children around and food in their hands, make sure they are under supervision with the dogs. They are small, eye height for many dogs and most of the time they are waving food around and the dogs thing this is an invitation to grab a quick snack.

As i said before using a crate for the visiting dogs is a wonderful tool. when they are running and horsing around and it gets to wild, Time out in the crate, If there is a disagreement of a toy or whatever a time out in the crate. If it bed time they will feel safer in the crate.

So, these are my tips for when dogs visit, your dogs home.
