White Boxer Dogs - Facts And Myths

Being a fan of the boxer dog, I have noticed over the last few years more and more white boxer dogs. I remember 25 years ago when we got our first boxer a male brindle boxer they weren't as popular and in some circles the white boxer was regarded as inferior compared to the fawn and brindle coloured dogs.

Some of the Myths regarding The White Boxer

  • They are albinos
  • Most white boxers are deaf
  • They are unable to be registered
  • The white boxer is more prone to disease
  • They are rare

Facts regarding the White Boxer

  • According to the North Eastern Boxer Rescue 25% of all boxers are born white
  • 18% of white boxers are born deaf in either 1 ear or both, however they can be trained and become a great pet obviously time and patience is needed
  • The white boxer can be registered and take part in obedience trials, but is not accepted in the show ring
  • They are no more disease prone than any other boxer
  • They are not albinos, they are just white in colour
  • They have all the same personality traits as the coloured boxers and make great pets it is only there colour that is different
  • Reputable breeders do not use white boxers for breeding purposes as they do not meet the breed standards requirement of colour - if the dog has more than a third of white it is considered a white boxer
  • Famous white boxer bitch Blanka Von Angertor was one of founding members of the breed in Germany in early 1900's

As opposed to 20 years ago it seems that many of the white boxer myths are fading and the reality is that the white boxer has become more widely accepted, if not for show or breeding purposes as they don't meet the breed standard according to the AKC.

Deafness in the white boxer is because of the lack of pigmentation of the hair cells in the ear. However given special training these dogs can still live happy and otherwise healthy lives and give their owners the same amount of joy and pleasure as the typical fawn or brindle boxer dog.

Personally the white boxers I have encountered seem to exhibit all the same personality and physical traits as the coloured boxers they are just white, just like any predominantly white breed of dog they get sunburnt so you would need to be mindful of that other than that if your wanting a boxer as a pet and not for breeding or show purposes the white boxer would be no different to owning a coloured dog.

So in conclusion when choosing a boxer if you are thinking about a white boxer the facts aren't all bad and there are plenty of stories regarding the white boxer which are extremely positive.

It is interesting about the fact that these dogs are born deaf in many cases. I wonder why pigmentation has anything to do with why the dogs are deaf? It is a very interesting article and I've learned something about dogs, especially the boxer breed, that I never knew about. Was the dog featured in "My Gang" or the Little Rascals from the 1930s a boxer? I think that one was white if it falls within the 1/3rd white category. Good job!

Apparently Bullseye the dog in the Oliver Twist film in the 70's was a white boxer, he went missing and his owners later saw him on TV in the film! I've often thought the same of The little rascals dog he definitely looks like hes got some boxer in him. Thanks for your comment.

The Pigmentation and the hearing loss gene are both carried on the same DNA strand. So if one gets messed up the other related ones in the same area have a greater chance of being damaged as well.
