Picking domain names can be both fun and frustrating. There are a number of aspects to picking domain names that need to be factored in to final decision. This article discusses the key issues everyone, and especially the newbie, needs to be aware of as you select domain names.

First and foremost, be aware that your domain name is your most important keyword. This means keyword research is the most important aspect of picking your domain name. It’s critical you understand what search keywords are likely to drive traffic to your website. However, there’s a balancing act between picking a well-known, high demand keyword that will be tough to rank for and an obscure keyword that will generate almost no organic traffic. By organic I mean traffic that finds you only because your website is ranked on page one or two of Google. For example, think about the affiliate program, “burn the fat build the muscle”. A website with the name “burn the fat build the muscle shop” is an option but I can almost guarantee your site will be on page two of Google due to the fierce demand for similar keywords. The point is, do your keyword research, be creative and try to keep your domain name short and catchy, which is admittedly is easier said than done.

Continuing with the burn the fat build the muscle example, you’re competing in the weight loss category. So something about lose weight, burn fat or belly fat, needs to be in your URL. In short: Is the URL easy for your customers to remember? Are any of your keywords in it? Does is reflect your business?

A simple way to quickly explore a lot of possible domain names is by just using the Google search tool. For example, let’s say you want a domain name reflecting your guitar lessons website. Go to the Google search tool and type in guitar lessons. Then you type in “guitar lessons a”, then “guitar lessons b” and so on until you run through the entire alphabet. This will generate lots of potential ideas for domain names and then take the best of them over to Google AdWords and plug them into the keyword tool to get a gauge for demand.

As more people purchase domain names the easy low hanging fruit for obvious catchy domain names has become more limited. The competition for domain names is especially heated in the .com category. The .com category is the most recognized business extension on earth. The other extensions like .net and .info are also beginning to see more demand. Recently GoDaddy began advertising the new extension .co. I recommend you consider this extension for your domain name for two key reasons. First, .co is new so your domain name options are still wide open. Second, it’s similar to .com so it gains some of the .com prestige.

Lastly, and this is purely personal preference, I suggest that at least newbies start with GoDaddy when shopping for your domain name. The reason for GoDaddy is their site is superbly designed and intuitive. GoDaddy is also an aggressive price discounter. I have no financial ties to GoDaddy; I just find their process works smoothly every time.
