Relevant Domain Names

In a previous article, I discussed website building and how important the content of the site is. I would like to add to that discussion today and talk about the importance of relevant domain names.

With Google as the current leading search engine on the Internet, and with Bing nipping at their heels, there is added importance in choosing relevant domain names for your website(s). I say this because there is definitely a search engine war going on behind the scenes that doesn’t really get too much notoriety with the exception of an occasional mention on the news. That’s because the changes that are being made aren’t noticeable to the average Internet user, with the exception of a few additions that haven’t been talked about much. In fact, some even say that today’s searches seem more complete and more relevant. You see, that’s the goal behind the search engine results, whether they’re from Google, Bing, or Yahoo.

That brings me to the point of my writing today. The war I mentioned earlier is all about delivering the best relevant search results, thus making advertising with a search engine more profitable for the respective search engine. That’s good for them, but what good is that to you? If you’re an Internet marketer, plenty. Getting your website to the top of the SERPS (search engine results pages) is every Internet marketer’s goal. Obviously this means more traffic, and more sales.

The number one reason why one website is higher in the SERPS than others is, you guessed it, relevancy. This makes perfect sense because if I was searching for say, diets, I wouldn’t be too happy if the results showed only a list of websites showing me exercise programs and then trying to sell me a gym membership. Instead, I would be expecting that list to show me diets – all kinds of diets. That’s what relevancy means. Getting the search results you expect.

One very important step in that direction is to plan your website around a very relevant domain name. In fact, the domain name you choose ideally would inform, at first glance, what the website is about. For example, flowers' website is about what? There’s toysrus that obviously sells toys. I think you get the idea. However, it’s doubtful that you will be able to register a domain containing the exact name of the product your offering and that’s ok, unless you sell only one product. A more fitting name in this case would contain a play on words, so to speak, that still tells the reader what your site is about. An example of this could be: esurance, who sells insurance – but all kinds of insurance, not just auto or house insurance. These are good examples of relevant domain names.

There are other domain names that don’t give the reader any clue about the products the company sells. Instead, these sites rely on their highly recognizable brand names. Sears is a good example of this. So is Target. Unless you already have a recognizable brand, I would stick to keeping your domain names relevant to your offering and the topic of your website.

This information should point you in the right direction when you get ready to purchase your domain for your site. Once you have your unique and relevant domain name, you can start working on getting noticed by the search engines because of your:

1. Relevant domain name.

2. Great, relevant content.

3. Relevant graphics presented in a way that interests your readers.

If I could show you how to get free, unlimited web hosting and inexpensive domain name registration, along with the tools you need to easily build your own, relevant website, would you be interested?
