Things to Consider When Choosing Your Domain Name

Choosing the right domain name for your website is an important part of laying the foundation for a successful online business. The name of your site is often times the first glimpse that your potential customers will get of what you site has to offer. This is you chance to "hook" them and distinguish yourself from the rest of the pack. The name of your website should be printed on every single piece of promotional material that you create, i.e. business cards, flyers, t-shirts, mass mailings, and the list goes on. It's going to be everywhere, so it needs to be good.

There are two main types of domain names to choose from. The first type of name is what is called a "brandable" domain name. Brandable name are all over the internet. You may have seen them before without even realizing it. Think "digg","reddit",or "chacha".Those are all brandable domain names that share the common characteristics of being, unique, catchy, and easy to say or spell. Brandable names are really good in respect to building a unique brand for your service or product. They tend to be easily recognizable and catchy making them more likely to stay in the thoughts of your potential customer. Brandable name do have a downside, however. Often times these types of names do a poor job of indicating what your site is about. This can cause confusion for your audience as they may not understand why they should be visiting your site at all. It's best reserve the use of brandable names to websites that you really plan to strategically market.

The other type of domain name that you could choose is called a "keyword-rich" domain name. These types of names are very specific but they usually aren't that catchy or clever. An example of a keyword-rich name for someone who sells cheap used blue cars could be something along the lines of "cheapusedbluecarsforsale". These names work well for sites dealing in a relatively small niche. Unfortunately as technology gets better and search engine algorithms become more advanced keyword-rich names are becoming less and less effective at helping to get your site ranked highly. They also seem rather "spammy" and unprofessional in certain situations. It's best to use this type of name if you are planning on serving a small market of customers with very specific needs.

As has been illustrated their are a lot of things to consider and a couple of different routes you can take. The ultimate goal of your domain name is to drive traffic to your website. Finding the right one can be a daunting task and you may want to do some further reading and research before you decide on what to call your site. There is also training available on these matters if you are a complete newbie and don't understand what this article is about at all.

My recommendation is to keep your domain name as short, simple, and catchy as possible. If you manage to set yourself apart from the pack there is no limit to the profits you can earn.
