Drug And Alcohol Abuse Are Clearly Considered to Be Vices

Drug and alcohol treatment involves rehabilitation at many levels, physical, social, economic, as well as spiritual. Interestingly, it is the latter facet of rehabilitation that advocates the institutionalization of drug and alcohol treatment recovery homes as a means of addressing the issue of drug and alcohol addiction. Indeed, the spiritual effects of drug and alcohol abuse are many. The concept of spirituality means different things to different people, but the underlying commonality in terms of the generally accepted definition of spirituality is what is being referred to here: The sense of one’s self-awareness, self-esteem, outlook on life, personality, state of mind, and quality of life.

Drug and alcohol abuse are clearly considered to be vices in virtually all of the world’s major religions, including that of Christianity. If you are a religious person, then in the eyes of God, you are committing a grave sin by indulging in these intoxicating substances. You are disobeying the command of God. And by doing so, you are shunning yourself from His Blessings and His Mercy, condemning yourself to living a life of moral depravity rather than living your life in such a way as to ascend to a higher plane of ascetic being. If you want God to love you, accept you, and welcome you to Heaven in the afterlife, then drugs and alcohol will serve as an impediment to this goal, and will lead you down the path of Hell. Therefore, drug and alcohol treatment can and should be aimed at bringing you back from the abyss of sin and toward the path of seeking nearness to God.

Even if you do not believe in the teachings of Christ, but you are a deeply spiritual person, you can recognize the fact that true enlightenment can only be achieved through sobriety. Unfortunately, many drug and alcohol pushers may advocate that the temporary highs and the “buzz” that you feel when you take these substances, can help you achieve a state of greater lucidity, and euphoria.

But of course, any well-educated individual would know that that sense of euphoria is like a wolf in sheep’s clothing: You may feel good when you ingest these substances. But in reality, you are causing irreparable damage to yourself physically, emotionally, morally, and cognitively. Drug and alcohol treatment can seek to educate you that there are better ways to achieve that sense of euphoria, through meditation, through the commission of good deeds, and achieving a sense of purpose, social justice and social responsibility, all of which happen to be the collective aims of most of the world’s religions.

Drug and alcohol treatment is necessary to restore your humanity. What is it that separates man from the animals? Human beings have the ability to reason. We have the ability to discern between right and wrong. When you consume illicit drugs and alcohol in excess, you impair your cognitive ability to think rationally and logically. You impair your ability to judge between right and wrong. You lose your inhibitions. And as such, you end up committing crimes and acts that your better sense of judgement, had you been sober, would have restrained you from getting involved in.
