For some time now, we’ve seen legislatures, activists, medical professionals and their patients with success stories – each being an active participant in the hot debate for the legalization of marijuana. However, there has been another source that has, so far, acted in the shadows, orchestrating propaganda that has delayed legalization – and their cause is not in sync with that of the general public. This crusade is led by none other than the pharmaceutical companies.

As more and more medical professionals and scientists conclude that marijuana may be the safer alternative to lethal painkiller drugs, these pharmaceutical companies have come forth with their own agenda.

Pharmaceutical Companies: Their Role In Medical Marijuana Legalization

In an article written by the Huffington Post, the author highlights the war on drugs and the real funders of this movement.

Most of us ponder on the mysterious involvement of drug companies – both within the United States and outside. As23 states having legalized the medical use of cannabis(and some legalizing for recreational use as well), these pharmaceutical companies continue to voice their opinion on the strict regulation of private cultivation and consumption. The reason that is quoted time and again is the ‘danger and risks’ of the potent drug.

The truth of the matter remains that these drug producing companies understand the pain relieving properties, along with the low-risk factors associated with marijuana. This information would affect the sales of their painkillers drastically.

Let’s take, for example, the Connecticut based pharmaceutical company, Purde, that has earned over $27 billion since its painkillers hit the market in 1996– a feat that may not have been possible had marijuana had been legalized sooner.

The Community Anti-Drug Coalition of America (CADCA) In Focus

What’s even more interesting is that certain anti-marijuana activists and organizations including, Community Anti-Drug Coalition of America, and Partnership for Drug-Free Kids, both, gained a decent chunk of their budget from opioid drug manufacturers. So, while CADCA takes a soft approach on these companies (naturally), it has always assumed a very hard-line approach toward the legalization of cannabis, making its anti-marijuana sentiments very apparent. Yet, unfortunately, 16,000 individuals die every year due to opium overdose.

As if the questionable stance of the organizations wasn’t enough, academics are joining suit as well. Take the example of Dr. Herbet Kleber from Columbia University. A man with impeccable credentials, and well respected for his views, he gained more popularity because of his anti-marijuana opinion on CBS News, CNBC and NPR. What remains to be conveniently left out from his statements are his alliance with painkiller manufacturing companies.

Kleber has been a paid consultant for Purdue Pharma (manufacturerof OxyContin), Reckitt Benckiser (that makes Nurofen), and Alkermes (the producers of Zohydro, an opioid base drug) for a long time and his statements shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Medical Marijuana: The “Lethal” Drug, Or Is It?

A lot can be learnt about this cannabis plant when we simply take a look at the opposition. Over the years, special interest groups including parents, religious organizations, and law enforcement professionals have publicly denounced the legalization of marijuana, claiming it is a dire risk on public health. These risks include addiction, violent behavior, and claims of insanity. Yet, time and again, over the past few years, these declarations have been refuted, proven wrong, and debunked with evidence of the drug helping in various medical conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, and epilepsy – both in adults and children.

In fact, some cannabis supporters have entered a browbeating debate, rightly comparing the negative effects of marijuana to be significantly less harmful than that of alcohol and tobacco – both of which are legal under the U.S. Federal law.

With opioid overdose causing about two deaths an hour – taking the lives of 46 Americans every day; with death toll for marijuana at zero in the past century, it begs the questions: who really is working to enhance and improve the health of patients, and who are the ‘real’ enemies?

One final thought: Before medicating with medical grade cannabis, it is imperative that you ensure that the product was tested.Modern Canna Science (MCS) plans to be one of the leading medical marijuana testing laboratories and cannabidiol research facilities in the state of Florida, if and when legalization occurs.

They plan to ensure that medical marijuana in Florida is of the safest and highest quality. This can be accomplished through the use of the latest cannabis testing equipment and methodologies. The instruments used for testing can help identify and quantify the presence of toxic chemicals down to parts per billion.Modern Canna plans to make sure that each cannabis flower, concentrate, or edible product is rigorously tested before it is presented for consumption by patients.
