Ohio\'s Governor Announces Plan to Stem Prescription Drug Abuse Across the State

Ohio's Governor John Kasich announced that he would be seeking help from physicians across the Buckeye State to fight the ongoing prescription drug abuse problem. That plan would call on emergency room doctors to follow some guidelines set forth in a newly released protocol. The plan is currently on a volunteer basis but is likely to expand and may soon be written into actual law. Kasich stated that the main focus would be on the so called "pill mills" that are focused in areas in southern Ohio.

Kasich announced that urgent care doctors would also be voluntarily following those protocols as well. Dr. Ted Hymyslo, the Director of Ohio's Department of Health said that the ER doctors who did not follow the current protocols would not face any kind of sanction at this point.

Those guidelines include restricting prescribing certain types of addictive pain medications to patients who come in complaining of any kind of pain. Those doctors will also be working with patients to work with a new pain management plan that would address the problem better. Nearly forty percent of all opiate prescriptions come from the state's emergency rooms.

In addition, the new state protocols will work toward stopping or at least slowing some of the drug seeking behaviors that mark the prescription pill addict. That includes doctor shopping, the practice of going to several doctors with the same or similar complaints without revealing that others have been consulted. Doctors will also stop refilling or replacing prescriptions that turn up missing or damaged in any way. A statewide database will allow doctors to see if the patient had been seen by other medical care providers and what the outcome for that visit was. Doctors in ERs can also screen for drugs if they suspect that they need to do so.

Doctors will also be limiting the amount or dosage of the opiods and other highly abused drugs when they write a prescription. For most patients, the prescription at the ER will be for one to three days, depending on the day of the week of the visit with the written direction to follow up with the regular doctor.

According to the Ohio Department of Health, forty percent of accidental overdose deaths in the state in 2009 were directly related to prescription drugs. One in four of all high school students in the state have used an illegal prescription drug at least once in their past. The number of prescription drug deaths from 2004 to 2008 was nearly six thousand.
