Opioid Addiction Treatment

Opioid Addiction is an epidemic that has been taking over the lives of tens of thousands of people across North America and the world. Opioid Addiction is when a person has the inability to stop using Opiates even when it is in their best interest to do so. Opiates are drugs like Morphine, Heroin, Codeine, while Oxycodone and Hydrocodone are derivatives of Opiates. These drugs are used to treat pain, and have other pharmaceutical uses however both medical and illegal use of Opioids can lead to dependence and addiction. Opiates can be taken in pill form orally, injected intravenously, or smoked.

There is a lot of controversy over the introduction of Oxycontin which has been held largely responsible for the increase of dependence and addiction to Opiates. Measures have since been taken to introduce a new form of capsule that is less likely to be for recreational use . In the meantime Opioid users have discovered a new way to 'get high' from Fentanyl patches which are Opiates that were introduced as an alternative to Oxycontin. You can see how this has become a major problem especially when there is both a legal and illegal market for these drugs.

Prolonged use of Opioids leads to dependence and addiction. This addiction is one of the hardest ones to break or recover from due to the withdrawal symptoms that one is faced with while 'kicking' the habit. Withdrawal from Opiates can be extremely dangerous as it makes individuals feel as though they have the worst flu in the world, diarrhea and vomiting are common as well as joint pain, tiredness and an overall feeling of shit, pardon the expression while going through the withdrawal process which usually lasts 5-7 days, with less serious side effects lasting up to a couple of months. Thankfully there are other ways to overcome this addiction making the process easier and safer.

These Opioid Addiction Treatment options include:

  • Treatment Centers
  • Medically Supervised Detox
  • Methadone Maintenance Program
  • Suboxone

I will not go into too much detail about these options except to say that these are all excellent options and I would never recommend someone trying to overcome an Opioid Addiction on their own, without consulting a Doctor.

Opioids have been around for thousands of years and are an integral part of pain control for people with serious and life threatening diseases and injuries, however they are not a joke and should not be used for recreation. These drugs are dangerous and lead to more overdoses than cocaine, and accounted for over 475,000 emergency room visits in 2009 in the United States.
