Salvia: the New Non Illegal Drug Younger People Are Increasingly Using

Salvia Divinorum, a native plant from certain zones in México, used as an ornamental plant is some places, has become very popular recently as a “soft” drug. It is a plant that grows to over a meter high, is has large leaves and white or violet flowers. It has been used in traditional Mazatec rituals in México by shamans to alter their state of consciousness during spiritual healing rituals. It is used mostly by smoking dry leaves, chewing fresh leaves or preparing an infusion from a very large quantity of them. It has hallucinogenic properties due to a psychoactive substance called salvinorin A, known by its dissociative effects which produce hallucinations and visions.

Salvinorin is the most powerful naturally occurring hallucinogen. It is being increasingly used as a non illegal drug because it remains legal in most countries. In the specific case of the United States, it is legal in almost all States, though there are prohibition proposals against it. It is still not regulated by the US Federal drug laws. This means that if get caught with Salvia, you will not be involved into almost any legal trouble.

An annual survey based in the US by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), indicated that in 2006 750,000 persons aged from 12, used Salvia for the first time along that year. Next year, 2007, it was reported with an increase to 1 million people, just in the USA. Many marijuana smokers have changed into Salvia, or use both mixed up because the hallucinatory effects of salvia are different from weed.

It seems that the ideal drug has arrived: it is not illegal, you could grow it at home as any other ornamental plant, and it is alleged to be of low toxicity and to having low addictive potential. So let’s face the facts: the active substance in Salvia is Salvinorin, a potent k-opioid which alters the reception of signals between neurons, because it acts as a kappa opioid receptor agonist, changing the perception of pain and consciousness and control over your body. It works in some different way than THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) the psychoactive substance found in the cannabis plant which affects the THC cannabinoid receptor CB1, located mainly in the central nervous system,

It is known just one legally reported case of death related to Salvia use. Is the case of Brett Chidester, a teenager who committed suicide by carbon monoxide inhalation inside a closed space, four months after he purchased Salvia Divinorum from a Canadian company via Internet. Though this is the only documented case, this incident shows some facts about the brain effects caused by Salvia. Until now it is not resolved as a direct effect of Salvia use, but it is clear from the research done to clear the case that it is very feasible that suicide thoughts who existed before into Brett’s mind could have been amplified due to one of the known effects of the Salvinorin intoxication: the amplification of any mental troubles inside the consumer’s brain. And that is one of the major risks involved in using this drug.

There are no scientific evidences of the dangerous side effects of using Salvia yet, but you only have to do a little research by internet to study testimonials about using it, to grasp that in most cases people report not having a good experience from it, besides it is undeniable that it produces depression and coordination impairing. The effects last no longer than 60-90 minutes, most times around 15-20 minutes, despite the administered dose, which could lead to use increasing doses to achieve any result. There are some testimonials telling that using concentrated forms of salvia can lead to a “more precipitous, and more terrifying face” of the experience, in a way that almost no one may wish to repeat the experience.

Our advice is: there are so very few pleasant effects from using Salvia that it is really not worth using it. If it is still under research to find its injurious effects doesn’t mean that it is safe to use it. It is no way advisable to alter your mind state artificially, it is better to avoid its use than waiting for the first reports about dangerous side effects, which for sure will come after years of research, and after that time of using it, it could be too late for you to avoid. There are other methods and activities that can produce better effects than using drugs, and make this life more bearable, without intoxicating your body. If you need some more information or assistance to overcome any drug addiction there are sites specialized on getting the most comprehensive and affordable methods and therapies to achieve this.
