Some People Might Argue That Substance Abuse is A Victimless Crime

Depending on a number of different factors, substance abuse treatment can be offered in many different forms. Factors such as your religious beliefs, the laws of the land in which you live in, economic factors, and cultural dictates can all play a role in what types of recourse you might take, or which might be taken against you, if you are found to be guilty of substance abuse.

Now, some people might argue that substance abuse is a victimless crime. As long as you are not hurting anyone else by taking the drugs that you do, what is the problem? What problem is it of anyone else, such as the government, what you do with your body, after all, right? But the fact of the matter is that substance abuse is NOT a victimless crime. When you abuse drugs, you are, whether directly or indirectly, hurting other people around you. For example, if you are a parent, your children will be adversely affected by the way the drugs alter your mood and cause you to become so inebriated that you neglect your parental responsibilities, as you would be too intoxicated to care for them, let alone be able to focus on your job duties at work, not to mention the bad example you are setting for them.

When you undergo substance abuse treatment, you can expect to go through an education (or, perhaps more appropriately, a “re-education’, process, since you should have already learned this information in school) on the dangers of taking illicit drugs. Education is the key to helping you make more informed choices when faced with a situation that involves the possibility of taking drugs. For example, many people use drugs as a form of escapism, as a coping mechanism to deal with stressful situations that cause anxiety or depression. They believe that the temporary feeling of euphoria, or that “high” that is experienced when taking drugs, is worth the cost in terms of consequences. They turn a blind eye to the fact that the consumption of illicit drugs causes more harm than good.

Now, of course education doesn’t stop at merely increasing your awareness of the harmful effects of drugs. Substance abuse treatment education also involves teaching you how to cope with various life situations, so as to prevent you from ever going back into a potential relapse. It also teaches you about how to be more assertive, develop your self-confidence, and acquire the skills necessary in order to be a more productive member of society.

You have no doubt heard the old saying that knowledge is power. So when you arm yourself with the right knowledge, you will be able to walk away from substance abuse treatment as a new and improved person. Let’s take a look at your options for substance abuse treatment.

So if I read correctly the education of drugs would not have been learned by the substance abusers and will have to be re-educated later on in life? Also that as a parent you will lose all parental responsibility? I am somewhat at a confused point here. Firstly the war on drugs has only been waged for the last 50 odd years and prior to this society as a whole enjoyed the relaxing properties of drugs hence the reason why drugs have been used since time began to help mankind. For example the cannabis plant has been shown to have many medicinal properties including the treatment of cancer. For would it not be better for a parent to feel pain relief and help their child than to be wasted on morphine? Interesting article and well written though. Thanks.
