The Issue Of Cognitive And Mental Degradation That is Caused By the Abuse Of Drugs

Substance abuse treatment works at multiple levels. People who abuse drugs to the point of addiction are destroying their lives in more ways than one. They are not only harming themselves physically through the ingestion of drugs that can have mind-altering and physically damaging side effects, but there are social consequences as well. If you have children, a spouse, siblings, or parents, they will all be adversely impacted by the consequences of your actions in some fashion. That is an inevitable fact. Let’s take a closer look at the many different ways that substance abuse can impact your life, and how substance abuse treatment may be able to help you in that particular context.

First and foremost, drug abuse causes physical harm. Controlled substances, taken in moderation, as directed by a physician or as approved by the Food And Drug Administration, are safe and acceptable. But when you overdose on them, or take them outside the boundaries of what is deemed acceptable limits, you run the risk of causing internal harm to your organs. When taking these drugs, you may experience a feeling of euphoria, or a “high” that makes you feel good. But that is only a superficial and albeit temporary feeling. The reality is that you are actually destroying yourself physically from the inside out.

And then there is the issue of cognitive and mental degradation that is caused by the abuse of drugs. Some people claim that drugs cause you to see things with greater lucidity and clarity, when in reality they are merely halucinating. Some controlled substances do exist, to ease the symptoms of anxiety or depression, but taken beyond the limits of what is prescribed, these can cause irreparable harm to your psyche, and transform your personality in ways beyond your control. Take for example the number of drug-related suicide deaths. These suicides are typically contemplated in an altered state of mind.

Not only does drug abuse cause you physical and mental problems, but it can also lead to social destruction as well. For example, if you are a parent, then there is no doubt that drug abuse can cause you to neglect or abuse your own children. Or, it can compel you to make irrational decisions such as committing theft or physical assault. Also, drug abuse can spread throughout a community like a wildfire. If you are taking drugs, then other people may be compelled to try taking drugs as well, out of curiosity or perhaps because you push drugs on them.

Recovery homes offer an excellent venue for substance abuse treatment, by helping recovery addicts get weaned off of their drugs, by rehabilitating them through education, therapy, and counseling, and by offering them a drug-free, safe, clean, and positively uplifting environment in which to get their life back on track.

Recovery homes are an excellent option for it substance abuse treatment.
