Ever wondered why depression is rife among drug users? Depression is one of the largest problems facing drug users, as far as their mental health is concerned anyway.
The feeling of euphoria is often the why behind people turning to drugs in the first place. It gives them a sort of high and helps escape from the troubles that can be causing people to feel depressed.
By getting high on drugs, it's something that will temporarily help people deal with the symptoms of depression, however, to get back into the mindset where they can forget their troubles and sometimes it's just a means for getting through the day.
The high is something that can become addictive. Especially for people with a sort of addictive personality.
With anything that provides a feel good factor, there's the risk of becoming emotionally attached to that habit. Whether that be smoking a cigarette, taking pills, smoking joints or injecting any drug, it's the effects of the substance which can help temporarily, while people are under the influence, but then when they come down from that high, that's when the trouble starts to set in.
Drug users will want to go after that same high again, especially for those already dealing with depression. With that comes the financial burden of being able to buy the drugs.
It's not uncommon for folks to spend their living allowance, whether that be a wage or welfare benefits, on drugs and not have enough groceries or perhaps even enough money to put on the electricity or have any heating.
As you can imagine, living this type of lifestyle is going to be depressing for anyone, so in the situations where people find themselves in this kind of mess, they'll often dive deeper into the drugs scene as a means to escape their realities.
With the downward spiral of drug use, you can see how it is that depression can become a major problem among drug users. No matter what type of drug it is that someone takes, it can go on to become the trigger behind depression.
This isn't just related to drug users either. Any addiction has the probability to cause depression. Take gambling. It's a progressive illness where people end up just gambling to break even and sometimes make huge losses on bets.
It's the adrenaline rush from winning that becomes addictive and from there, that's the high that gamblers will chase. Gambling addiction can be just as bad as any other drug addiction.
