Nowadays people may wonder whether family education is still important or not. School education seems to have taken over the place of education already. Most of the children learn in schools rather than at home. However, that is not the case. Family education is still important and is essential to a child’s growth. There are advantages in both family education and school education.
First, let us define the word “Education”. Education can be divided into five different parts, including moral education, intellectual education, aesthetic education, physical education and group education. Family education means education of a child is provided by his parents or relatives outside school, while school education means the education that a child received by his teachers during school hour.
Family education has three main characteristics. Firstly, it is enlightening as a child received family education before he goes to school and receives school education. This period is the most essential to a child as during this period, a child is most absorptive. Therefore, family education is very important to a child’s development of intelligence, formation of thoughts and personality. Secondly, it lasts for a long period because it starts before a child goes to school and its impacts will still affect a person even if he grows up. When compared to school education, the impact is long-term. Thirdly, family education stresses moral education. Moral education mainly comes from family education. A child could also learn from school education, but it is not as much as he gains from his family. As a child lives with his parents since he was born, his parents are the people he sees most. All the words his parents say and all the actions his parents do are their models. A child always imitates the action of his parents and speaks what his parents say.
Unlike family education, school education stresses intellectual education. A school has teachers that can educate a child with his professional knowledge. Moreover, a school has different facilities that provide a suitable environment for learning. Family education may not this aspect of knowledge for children, and family education and school education should both exist.
In my opinion, family education is more important than school education because the objective of education is to help people to contribute to society after receiving education. A person receives both the moral education and intellectual education can contribute to society for sure, but how about a person who lacks either one? A person who lacks of intellectual education can still contribute to society. However, a person lacks moral education may become a burden of the society and affect the people around him as well. Therefore, family education is more important than school education.
