Most Common Causes For Hearing Loss In Children

In life, you cannot change things from happening, but you can make them easier to handle. This is my testimony for the hardship I have gone through with my little kid Eliot. He is the smartest boy you have ever seen, mathematics genius and good DOTA player (he takes after his old man). It was until the age of 6 when we started noticing the problems with his hearing. We conducted many various hearing tests for children until the doctors said that he lost part of his hearing. The good news was that they said it was temporary! So let me share my experience and the research I went through on finding more about hearing the loss in children.

What are the most common causes of hearing loss at children?

Genetic problems

Many hearing loss problems come from genes related diseases. For example, Waardenburg syndrome causes mild to total hearing loss. This syndrome starts from birth and it has a non-progressive path. Another genetic condition that causes hearing loss is Crouzon syndrome. It forces the plates of the skull to become joined, preventing brain growth and giving multiple deformities on the face.

Complications During Pregnancy

If you contract some diseases while you are pregnant you can cause hearing problems to your infant. Syphilis, diabetes and measles all are in the high-risk territory of causing hearing loss to the unborn child. Another complications can arise from using drugs that are ototoxic. It is very important that what type of drugs you are taking, always consult with your doctor before taking any pills. Premature babies always have the risk to develop hearing loss problems. If this problem occurs, it will also interfere with the immune system because the baby will have not developed lungs and infections can spread to the ear canal.

Conductive Hearing Loss

Conductive hearing loss happens when there is a blockage in the ear, preventing any sound passing to the inner ear. This is temporary, and when the cause is removed the hearing goes back to normal. The most common reason is that the upper respiratory infections, that causes the middle ear to secrete a fluid that will block the sound from reaching the inner ear. When the fluid is removed it will return the hearing to a normal state.

Acquired Hearing Loss - Permanent

Loss of hearing can happen in any period of time and sadly can be permanent in some situations. Mostly it is associated with ageing, but children can also have total hearing loss through a various number of causes. Chicken pox and measles if not treated right can lead to damage to your hearing, and with children can lead to total healing loss. Another way of loss hearing is noise trauma or a strong head injury.

One of the most hearing loss of children is having enlarged vestibular aqueducts. These are the narrow passages that connect the inner ear and the cranium. Throughout development, children can develop unusual forms that are not in the shape of the letter “J” and disconnecting the crane and the inner ear. This will affect them with a permanent hearing loss.

Conclusion

When you notice something wrong with the hearing of your kids, go asap to your doctor. Request all the usual hearing tests for children and see if there is damage and what steps to take next. I know it can be hard going through all of this, but give your maximum and may gods love be with you!
