Understanding Food Addiction: The Signs, Symptoms, And Road to Recovery

Do you or a loved one have a food addiction? Food addiction is also known as compulsive overeating and is generally characterized by an obsessive and compulsive relationship with food. Food addicts will generally engage in frequent episodes of binge eating. During the binge, food addicts will often feel out of control and will eat past the point of being full. Another part of food addiction is the compulsive eating.

People who suffer from food addiction are preoccupied with food and spend most of their time thinking about food as well as planning ways to secretly eat food. Food addiction can lead to serious medical conditions such as heart disease, stroke, hypertension, problems sleeping and other medical conditions that are related to being overweight. Food addicts will develop a physical, mental, emotional and chemical dependance on food. For those who are suffering with a food addiction the good news is the food addiction treatment is available.

Signs and symptoms of a food addiction

How do you know if you or your loved may be suffering from food addiction? Below is a list of the some of the most common signs that one may have a food addiction. Always keep in mind that everyone is different and not everyone will present with the same signs and symptoms.

  • Binge eating or eating when not hungry
  • Eating larger portions
  • Choosing to eat alone due to embarrassment or shame
  • Depression and constant mood swings
  • Obsession with body weight
  • Rapid weight gain
  • History of weight fluctuations
  • Eating very little if at all in public
  • Very low self esteem
  • Constant preoccupation with food
  • Feelings of guilt due to the overeating
  • Sudden onset of being withdrawn from friends and family members

Food addiction is more than just one overeating or living an unhealthy lifestyle. Food addiction is a biochemical disease that if left untreated can prove to be fatal. Food addicts will find themselves craving refined carbohydrates, such as sugar, and these cravings become so uncontrollable. A food addict will generally understand that what they are doing is not healthy, yet they do not have the ability to stop eating the way that they do. These cravings become the center and focal point of one's life that the quality of their life quickly deteriorates. Overcoming food addiction is possible however one will need to generally attend a food addiction treatment center or work with a medical care professional.

How is food addiction treated?

Depending how severe one's food addiction or binge eating disorder is will also depend on the treatment that is provided. Many people will look to a food addiction treatment center for the help that they need. At one of these centers for food addiction, all issues are addressed. Food addicts will need to learn how to have a healthier relationship with food and they will need to find ways to combat and deal with the cravings that they are having.

Counseling sessions to help with behavioral modifications such as 12 step programs are often found to be very helpful when it comes to battling a food addiction. In most cases, food addicts will need to become aware of what type of food they are craving. For example, some people have a fast food addiction and this will be one of the key points of treatment. One part of the food addiction recovery is avoiding those foods that once triggered the addiction in the first place. Many experts will tell food addicts that the best way to stay on the road to recovery is to stay away from refined carbohydrates at all costs. These refined carbohydrates, such as sugar, can trigger the cravings to once again kick back in.

Other forms of treatment include working with a nutritionist. Ensuring that one is drinking at least 64 oz of water a day and is exercising on a frequent basis has also shown to be quite effective in the food addiction treatment.

Food addiction can become a very serious medical condition. If you or your loved one may be suffering from a food addiction, the time is now to get the help that is needed.
