Going Green; Transforming Your Home

Oil is a dying breed. Soaring prices at the fuel pump and increasing awareness of negative effects of petroleum and other fossil fuels have lead to the beginning of a ‘green’ revolution. Consumers are motivated now more than ever to shop locally, organically and sustainably. A common theme these days is that of “Doing your part,” which fuels an emerging trend of companies that are environmentally responsible and sustainable. These companies are enjoying a booming market and hungry customers. Energy saving goods and other green products are flying off the shelves, and for good reason. But to what cost?

In the beginning stages of this ‘green transformation,’ emerging technologies can be expensive, and consumers might second guess converting, say their home, to solar energy. Estimates for various sized homes and businesses can range from $12,000-$40,000+, depending on the electrical output needs and desired system size. No doubt this will stop many environment-friendly home-owners in their tracks. Most are not able to invest such large amounts of money, especially during this day and age. This lack of funds, however, does not eliminate the obligation many feel to reduce their ‘energy footprint,’ or become more environmentally friendly. Luckily, alternative methods to a ‘green’ transformation are emerging almost as rapidly as their more expensive counterparts.

Simply being aware of consumption in a home can help to lower that home’s consumption substantially. A 25% cut in power and water usage alone would have a monumental impact on an environmental footprint. Devices can be installed to aid in monitoring, broadcasting and even regulating a household’s usage and consumption. These tactics are proven to be effective in minimizing the effects any one home has on local resources and the environment. For some, this minimizing satisfies their moral obligation for a cleaner world, but others seek to eliminate their footprint altogether.

This requires a conversion of an entire home, which, as mentioned earlier, can be very costly if you do so using the traditional approach, but there are other options. Many homeowners don’t realize how easy it is to convert a home on their own, utilizing only clean, renewable energy. With a little time and effort, solar panels and other devices can be created at a fraction of the cost of large manufacturers; sometimes as low as $100. Do-it-yourself kits have become widely available for the public and allow for even the most novice craftsman to create green technology that can be applied to his/her home. From solar generators to solar hot tubs, these guides can get any environmentally friendly homeowner headed in the right direction.

While new ‘green’ products are being invented almost daily, one doesn’t have to wait for them to hit the shelves in order to start “Doing their part.” As information across the internet continues to be shared at unprecedented rates, anyone is able to access what is needed to take part in the green revolution. For those who are motivated to do so, a little research online can lead you in the right direction. The revolution has begun. Jump in.
