Incompetency at Its Best: Why Governor Snyder Should Quickly Usher In A State Appointed Financial Manager for Detroit

A while ago, I vowed not to write anything negative about the city, as there are enough depressing stories going around about Detroit to fill dozens of newspapers every day. But after witnessing the blatant disrespect that some residents displayed towards the governors financial review team, I felt the urge to speak out and voice my opinion.

A History of Mismanagement

I am an African American and a lifelong resident of the city of Detroit. Born in 1980, I have been around since the reign of former Mayor Coleman Young and I cannot remember a time when the city wasn’t cash strapped. And if we were ever financially whole, the money was not being properly allocated to the communities, as there have always been several neighborhoods left in the dark (literally) and structures are still left half standing from the riots that occurred decades ago.

City Leaders Failed to Deliver

Like many other voters and residents, I had faith that our leaders would restore the Detroit to its once prosperous state and help make it a world-class city (with the cooperation of the residents, of course). Elections came and went, yet very little changed. Sure, administrations touted their accomplishments during the State of the City addresses, but outside of downtown Detroit, hardly any change occurred in the areas where the majority of the residents lived. After the Kilpatrick administration scandal was uncovered, it seemed as though all hope was lost; that was until Mayor Bing and the new members of city council were elected. They all seemed to have the determination and business experience needed to bring about a new day in the city. That hope was short lived, as we have entered into a state of financial emergency under their leadership.

I should state that it is not fair to hold them responsible for the entire state of the current financial situation, as this problem had been snow balling long before they arrived. However, someone should have sounded the alarm and created a plan to stop the bleeding shortly after arriving into office. The current administration is reactive. We need leadership that is proactive.

After decades of incompetency, corruption and unprofessionalism, it’s time to usher in new leadership in Detroit, and if that leadership comes in the form of a state appointed employee, then so be it. I would rather take a chance with someone new, than keep trying the same unfruitful tactics with the current administration. In fact, it would be insane to continue to do so.

The Race Card

Seeking help from the state is the best move that the city could make, but because the "us (black) versus them (white)" mentality is heavily supported by some members of the city's leadership, many residents will not even consider the benefits of a financial manager. This mentality was evident in the firestorm that erupted during Mondays meeting with the governor’s review team, when residents made ugly and very ignorant racial comments to a panel of people that were put in place to ultimately help them. Minister Malik Shabazz even went as far as saying that “we will burn the city down before we let them have it.” After being questioned by the media about his irresponsible rants, he refused to apologize or recant his statement. This is exactly the type of mentality that we do not need in the city, and many residents were outraged and embarrassed by his comments.

I personally welcome any and all help that the governor has to offer, because I am not naive enough to believe that our current city leaders can handle the crisis that we are in. I hope they prove me wrong.
