Two separate Occupy Wall Street camps, one in Atlanta, Georia and the other in Oakland California have been cleared out by police in those cities, with multiple arrests in both locations. In Atlanta, protestors were urged to remain peaceful if there were to be arrests. Police came to Woodruff Park where the protestors have been camped, many for as long as two weeks and ordered them to leave, warning that arrests would be made if they did not comply. When police returned, the group linked arms in the center of the park and sang songs while they were led out. Most of the protestors were led out on their feet to the waiting police buses while others were seen being dragged from the park in cuffs.
Included in the arrested protestors in Atlana was Georgia State Senator Vincent Fort who stated that he came to show his support to the movement. Fort called the police presence ridiculous because the movement was peaceful. He also called out Atlanta's Mayor, Kasim Reed., slamming him for bowing to the will of the business community instead of looking at the big picture. Reed countered by saying that the protest was costing his city over $300,000.
Meanwhile, in Oakland, California, the protests were not as peaceful with frequent clashes with police. On Tuesday, several rounds of tear gas and bean bags were fired into the crowd in an effort to move them out of the area in front of City Hall. Police and officials there have called the protest dangerous in terms of sanitation as well as in terms of security. Police came back in riot gear to watch the crowd as the threat of violence continued into the night. Acting Police Chief, Howard Jordan has also released a statement that explained his decision to use ter gas and the bean bag rounds, saying in part that the protestors have thrown rocks, bottles and other items at police officers. Two officers have reportedly been injured in skirmishes with the group.
Occupy Wall Street started in New York City and is similar to movements that are ongoing in parts of Europe. Both in Europe and the US, the movements have spread from city to city in protest against economic inequality. The protest movement in New York has grown to staggering numbers and has been tried to shut down "for cleaning" according to officials with little success. Protestors in Atlanta and Oakland have vowed to return to their protest location. Protests in other cities, including Detroit and others are also ongoing.
