Occupy Wall Street: The Sticking Point For The Upcoming Election And More
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

The movement that has been dubbed Occupy Wall Street is moving into its second month and taking on a life all its own. Other cities are starting to see their own "Occupy" movements and politicians from both sides of the political fence are quick to provide their assessment of what is going on. Experts agree on only one thing: the ongoing protests are going to be a major factor in next year's presidential election even if they all end today.

President Barack Obama appears to be supporting the movement, including those that have protested in Chicago in recent weeks. One of the President's key advisers, David Pouffe told the CBS show, Good Morning America that Obama is in support of the consumers and the middle class which many critics have taken as a sign that he is not only being supportive but actually endorsing the actions that are being taken. Political analysts caution that such blatant support for this loosely formed group could prove to be problematic for Obama, especially if something major changes in the protests.

The protest moment is loosely defined with no real leaders or agenda - and support for the movement is coming from all walks of life, including groups that would not be beneficial to be linked to. But, because there are no leaders or people serving as the de facto voice of the movement, Obama's support could put him in that precarious position, which can cost him any tenuous support he currently holds. A number of the Republicans who are currently jockeying for position in a turbulent field of candidates have been quick to take a more negative stance, further distancing themselves from the President. Herman Cain, currently a leader in the polls, called the protesters "jealous" and accused them all of playing the victim card. Mitt Romney called the Occupy Wall Street movement nothing more than "class warfare"

The protesters have been in place for slightly more than a month and are getting increasingly edgy. There have been more and more instances of clashes with policemen and a reported eight hundred arrests have been made. The marked increase of arrests have many concerned that the movement may be on the brink of turning violent. If that occurs and Obama withdraws his support, he will be seen as a flip flopper.

Those protesters that have been arrested are being represented by members of the National Lawyers Guild and are asking that all of the charges against them be dropped summarily. If not, the protesters have vowed that they will turn up en masse, at the courthouse for each and every trial that is being held. Citizens are concerned that the prosecutor's office will not be able to handle the additional caseload. Some of the New York City's courts report nearly one hundred thousand cases per year already. Sixty of the protest members are due in court in November.
