Growing Older? What Ails You Doesn\'t Have to Define You

Growing older. Senior citizen. Elderly.

These words strike fear in the hearts of those middle aged approaching the "golden years". Life as one lives in a young body begins to change. Wrinkles and sun-spots give way to permanent drooping eye lids and bags under the eyes. The task of climbing the stairs from the basement with a load of laundry used to be easy. Now it becomes difficult to reach the top stair without being out of breath or the lower back twinging in pain.

Eye sight diminishes, hearing deficits become an issue. Little memory problems become burdensome ie: "What did I come in this room for?" Getting up to go to the bathroom more often, especially at night, plagues both men and women. Couple that with arthritic joints, the trip to the bathroom is a longer journey, sometimes riddled with an "accident" or two, by not reaching it in time.

Dietary concerns begin. As teeth have been removed and replaced with partials and dentures, the ability to chew and enjoy certain foods is no longer an option. Hair turns gray for men and women. Balding is an affliction not reserved for men. Female alopecia (hair loss) can begin as early as the 20's and 30's in some women.

The ability to enjoy sports and activities one has practiced since youth sometimes becomes impossible. A weak heart (caused by heart attack, stroke, or any of the various cardiac conditions plaguing seniors in our culture today) can curtail even the basic ability to leisurely walk a golf course. Elderly respiratory problems vary from asthma to COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). The carefree lifestyle some seniors had growing up (cigarettes, excessive alcohol use, occasional street drugs) has lent itself to these problems.

AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are being diagnosed in more elderly as well, as the baby boomer generation grows older. The "devil may care" attitude and promiscuity in the 60's, 70's and 80's may be the cause of seniors with genital herpes and Syphlis.

Money woes, maintaining a household. All were much easier years ago, when able to work full time and health wasn't a concern.

Daily activities such as driving to the store when you are out of bread. Not easy when you are afraid to drive your car because your family says you are unsafe. Paying bills with a stamp and an envelope? Not an option with some utilities. Now the senior must learn to access the internet and move with the times.

What do you do when it feels like the world is on your shoulders?

Prioritize.

"Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs" is a perfect example of how to put things into perspective and take charge when your body is dictating parts of your daily life.

Pain and pleasure. If your body or mind are hurting, you cannot function physically or think clearly to live your life the way God intended. The first thing to do is consult your physician regarding what ails you, be it creaky joints, a weak bladder, or grief after your spouse died.

Once you have dealt with the physical, you can deal with your social life and well being.

Seniors now are not stuck in the house to knit or read books (although those are great pastimes!). Many organizations cater to the older adult. Fitness clubs, lodges, church groups, retail and restaurant organizations draw elders in with deals and keep them with a friendly atmosphere. There is no intimidation for the senior to participate, since activities are geared toward their interests and abilities.

Once a senior gets out and about, they can realize they are still a productive member of society. Rich with history from generations, elders have much to offer. They can and do get hired in part and even full time positions where their sphere of influence often includes the younger generation, where values and beliefs are greatly needed. Volunteering is also beneficial. Many, if not all, organizations, welcome seniors to join their ranks.

This all leads to full actualization of life. Living life to the fullest.

Seniors: attack your problems as they arise. Research and ask questions. Find information at the library, in your community, at your local "stomping grounds". Get opinions from other seniors.

But most of all. Don't stop living because you are getting old, or ARE old. You are priceless to many, even if you feel that with age you are becoming less...

You are an antique. You INCREASE in value with age!

Realize this, embrace it, and love who you are!
