E-Book reader. Which one?

This is an area where you might just need some help. You have come to the right place. The first thing to do is look at a few comparisons one of which I have prepared below. This comparison is to show just what is on the market and the two devices featured are at opposite ends of the scale. This will help you decide what you really want from an ebook reader.

First up is a dedicated ebook reader in the form of the ever popular Kindle

Kindle 3

  • The kindle is one of the most compact readers on the market
  • Easy to carry and very pocket-able
  • Weighs only 8.7ozs
  • Thin as a pencil
  • Battery life of a whole month
  • Crisp dark font
  • Easy to read in direct sunlight just like a paper-back
  • Stores a very creditable 3500 books
  • Can read newspapers and magazines
  • PDF compatible so you can store all those documents
  • When you get tired, Kindle will read the publication to you out loud
  • You can even browse the web in a limited way
  • New, is the introduction of “lend a book” facility, so you can lend that inspiring book to friends and family
  • Has a keyboard so you can make notes on files or books
  • You can even listen to music albeit in MP3#

Apple I-Pad

  • Altogether this is a different thing and is capable of doing several things that the Kindle cannot
  • The whole thing is larger with a 9.7” screen
  • Has a superb glossy LED backlit touch-screen in full colour
  • Big storage capacity of up to 64GB
  • Will store a mind boggling 50,000 books (64GB model)
  • Built in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
  • A very creditable battery life of 10hrs
  • Play games using the touch-screen
  • Play movies and videos
  • An e-reader of course
  • Access to i-Book store and download books quickly and easily
  • If you like Apps , then i-Pad accepts these in abundance

Are you still thinking about which one to get? Don’t rush into it. Look at some more reviews of similar gadgets to get a feel for what you really want in a device. This review is really to draw your attention to the different levels of ebook reader available.

Here are a few pros and cons for the two readers that we are looking at currently:

Kindle 3

  • Light and compact makes the Kindle a joy to travel with
  • Compactness enables you to put it in a pocket
  • Screen will not glare in bright sunlight
  • Screen mimics paper and gives a nice contrast
  • Black and white screen only
  • Web browsing is limited
  • Kindle will require artificial lighting in the dark just like a paper book would, but a neat accessory is available for this

Apple I-Pad

  • The battery life may be inconvenient with so many applications
  • The glossy screen is a tremendous asset but will glare in sunlight
  • Web browsing is good and you won’t get adverts but where the adverts were, you are left with a big blank space
  • Do not imagine that the Apple will replace your computer since it will not multi-task to the same extent
  • It’s not going to be as pocket-able and it weighs more than the Kindle so transportability is not as good
  • Backlit screen means you can read it at night without artificial light

I hope I have been able to give you an insight into what you can expect from just two e-book readers. The real question you need to ask yourself is not so much which ebook reader, but what type.
