Errors when surfing the web can be very annoying and especially when it’s the “404 not found” error. This error can emerge while surfing any website and at anytime. This error message is frequently customized by many websites individually. There are many ways in which you might see these errors, when surfing websites. These appear like ‘404 error’, ‘The requested URL was not found on this server’, ‘Error 404’, ‘HTTP 404’ and some more like these. This error is not restricted to any particular web browser or operating system and can pop up anywhere, anytime. Most commonly the 404 errors display inside the web browser window, just like webpages do.
Why such ‘404 errors’ appear?
· This is a HTTP status code, which depicts that the webpage you were trying to find on the website cannot be found on this server.
· 404, technically is a client side error, which implies that the URL you entered in the search bar is wrong or that the page has been removed or moved and it is something you should have been aware about.
· Sometimes websites remove an old link, without adding a redirect URL on the old page. This leads to popping up of 404 error and you do not automatically get redirected to the new URL/page.
Dealing with ‘404 not found error’
· Sometimes simply pressing the refresh button or reloading the URL/address you entered can help in opening the webpage, as the error might appear due to no reason at all.
· The URL must be cross-checked, as typing even one alphabet wrong can lead you landing on the error screen
· Searching for the page directly on major search engines can help in easily reaching that webpage you were searching for
· If trying to get rid of this error, make sure you move up only one directory at a time, until you reach somewhere
· Clearing the cache on browser can help, especially if you are able to access the page from your mobile, but unable to do so from your PC
· Changing the DNS servers that are being used by your computer can also help, but this works only when an entire website is giving a 404 error, rather than a single page
· If nothing works you can opt for directly contacting the website to know why the issue is popping up and make them aware about something they were not knowing till now
