Plasma And Lcd Tvs - Purchasing A New Hdtv - Plasma Or Lcd?

Purchasing a new flat screen television is an exciting time, but the huge selection and complicated jargon of specifications can sometimes be bewildering. This article looks at one primary issue to consider whether to buy a plasma or LCD television.

Plasma TV screens are filled with a gas. The same gas that makes the Northern Lights flicker in Earth's upper atmosphere. We call it plasma and it is why plasma TVs can ultimately be made so thin. The glass screen made up of a matrix of tiny cells and electrodes are filled with electrically charged neon and xenon to make plasma. Which in turn gives plasma televisions their bright and vivid colors. Plasma TVs can produce up to one million colors, that is more colors than the human eye can recognize. Because of the high refresh rates, these ultra thin televisions are perfect for fast action events since there is almost any motion blur. Plasma TVs also are ideal for dim-lit rooms.

LCD stands for liquid crystal display. Liquid crystal is an element that has properties between an ordinary liquid and those of a solid crystal. The liquid crystal is placed between two glass plates with a polarization filter on either side of the plates. With the polarization filters in place, means that light can only travel in one direction. The liquid crystal is rotated at 90 degrees between the glass plates so light can only travel along its path. If a charge is put to the front plate, it disrupts the liquid crystal and act as an on/off switch. Now you create a matrix of these switches, and you can display any image you wish. LCD TVs are great for gaming and their power consumption is 30% lower than Energy Star's standards. LCD TVs are light weight, they offer no glare so they show well in any light. Also with higher refresh rates on newer models, motion blur is becoming a thing of the past.

In choosing plasma and LCD TVs, resolution is always a matter. Resolution is a count of the pixels going horizontally and the pixels going vertically. These two number multiplied by one another gives you the total number of pixels displayed on a screen. The more pixels displayed on a screen, the more detail in the image. Nowadays there is only two resolutions worth mentioning out of the 16 which is 720 p and 1080 p. If you are not a big TV watcher or you are in the market for a smaller TV, then save yourself some cash and get 720 p resolution because you will get the same satisfaction as with the 1080 p. But if you are a serious gamer, sports enthusiast, or just want a big television then 1080 p is the way to go. Side by side there is a big difference between the two resolutions and 1080 p is the best in picture resolution for now. With that said more content and devices are developed for 1080 p everyday.

Whenever picking out a new plasma or LCD TV you want to make sure it has good contrast. A way to do this is to check the darkness of the screens while the TV is off. The darker the screen the deeper the blacks displayed on the television. Plasma TVs has better contrast than LCD TVs because a second screen was added to increase the contrast. The newer LED-LCD TVs has high contrast as well.

Burn-in occurs when a static image is left on a plasma television to long. Burn-in can take place in as little as 20 minutes. LCD TVs have a problem with individual pixel burn-out. This happens over the life of the TV and is a problem that cannot be repaired.

Back-lights control brightness, color accuracy, and power consumption for LCD televisions. With plasma TVs, the plasma acts as the light emitter so a back-light is not needed. LCD TVs use cold cathode fluorescent lamps a.k.a. CC-FL lamps for back-lighting although TV manufactures are now adopting LED back-lighting because of their superior power efficiency and ability to produce higher contrast than CC-FL lamps.

In choosing the right size TV the distance between you and the TV is measured and divided by 2.5. This will give you about the right size TV to get. Then take a diagonal measurement of where the television will sit to make sure it's a fit.

The best viewing angle is dead on, however if you stay within 30 degrees, that is OK as well.

While buying a new flat screen TV can seem complicated, knowing the basics for comparison makes all the difference. Consider the options and features with care, then enjoy your new big screen television to the fullest! Thank You
